Hmm I know that xfire has a good group feature, it's quite similar to Steam's, but with more features... you know if we ever decide to become one of those clans that focus on those super swell Modern Warfare games...

I have an archieve of two older boards backed up on my computer. My dream is to try to convert the data to the new version of the forum and merge it with this one, but that is not as easy as it sounds.

An alternate plan could be to install two more databases and run them alongside the new board as readonly.

I like this idea Chucara.  I doubt the archives, as old as they are, are likely to contain anything meriting further discussion, at least not enough things to warrant upgrading them to the new boards as fully interactive forums, but it would be nice to have them available as archives for the purposes of continuity and history.  If there's something in them that needs further discussion, a member could always copy paste the relevant bits to a new thread and/or link the archived thread.  At any rate, if you post them as read-only archives, you could always reserve the right to take on the more arduous task of converting them to fully interactive forums at a later date, but at least we would have them in some fashion.  I like seeing how we've progressed as a board and as individuals over the years, and I feel like losing our archives every time we upgrade not only robs us of that, but also robs us of any name-recognition and reputation we have built in the interwebs up to that point.

I really liked the sound of this, if possible I think I can find posts as old as the fallout message board (with a little digging).

Haven't really read the entire thread, but has the topic come up of starting multiple game groups? Stuff like Steam (if you use it,) bnet (non real ID, so limited to D3 if you can stomach it.), etc, etc.

It may not get everyone, but you'd have a listing of everyone you COULD play with if you don't want to go alone.

You know Steam groups have massivley improved lately:
They offer...
  • A small notice board (though admittingly no where near as good as a proper forum, still it would attract new posters)
  • A chat room, that offers a real time chat.
  • The ability to create events and announcements
  • The ability to dedicate your group to a game or several games
  • Allows the ability to have mods as well as admins
  • It also offers plenty of chance for discussion with a comments box on the main page/ announcement and events also have comments available underneath them and as I mentioned the chat feature does.

I think that steam maybe a good place to have a group simultaneous to this one, I know of at least 3 members of this site who are on Steam and play games on their regularly. Also I'm pretty sure a number of old users would stumble across a steam group, as I see it they are far more likely to do so.

I second that emotion.

If that doesn't include Chucara and I you can add two more to that.

Another possiblity came to me around the time that the UV was invited to the vault community.

I don't know if it's been suggested yet, but a wiki could work. You can found your own whenever you like on Wikia and the UV has more than enough lore to support a wiki. If we wanted a revival in written work such as fiction, poetry, blogposts and so on then I think a wiki would be a good place to start.

Not only would it be easy for current members, but anyone can edit. So it would allow passing through members to create content or even new people who stumble across it. It would be like the days where you could post without signing up for the board you're posting on (I remember you could do that at a time.) I don't suggest fully moving to a wiki though since the forum features are somewhat inferior in my opinion, but for written content that is easily accessible and editable you can do much worse.

It would also be a brilliant place to archive those old threads that were mentioned above and archive old odds and sods from over the years.

anyone can edit.

You realize, of course, that I am in the subset "anyone can edit."

Well, not to (re)take my shoes off 'too' quickly after such a hiatus, but....

I found you all via 'running down a wiki hole'.  I was looking up something on FO4, clicked on wild wasteland, found 'our' encounter, and thought, "no way.... They can't be still th...." But I checked, and I am SO pleased I did!

We could, in the short term, 'brand' ourselves as the Elder Sages of the Olden Days (which, frankly, I certainly FEEL 'elder'....) to the MILLIONS of new FOers, and the old schoolers that are now rebooked and wanna throw in 1 or 2, and find some folks that 'get it'.

And then..... We cover them in dirt.  Not gross dirt.  Just Unwashed Dirt.  :-)

Fallout 3 and 4 brought with them a lot of new generation Fallout fans. Its certainly possible that the UV could spark some interest in the new community.

also, since I am a little drunk, I want to take this moment to remember the deceased members of the UV

RIP Darkfox and Kama (I don't think I missed anyone else...)

NMA is still going strong (and one of it's admins works for inExile--the company that grew out of the remnants of Interplay; he was also both a member of The Order and an old school UV'er).

So it's not as if all the communities that sprung out of FO1 are dead or on life support.

I've been a part of a TeS RPing community for two years now and we've finally branched out into Fallout RPing.

I've made a wikia for Fallout related writings (we take stories, character sheets, etc...) http://fallout-gravel-pit.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Gravel_Pit_Wikia here. I registered the UV as an associate. We only have three users right now as we're still putting things together, we've only been operational for like three hours.

Anyway, going to invite the TES peeps over, later on in the week. If you would like, I'd be more than happy to give the UV it's own subforum and community corner spot, where you can chat, post writings and do other Fallout related activities.

It's certainly something to consider, and I'm certainly not opposed to the idea.

What does everybody else think?
