You should discover the wonder that is Team Fortress 2. Even when you suck, it's still fun if you get in with the right bunch of people.
I already looked at it longingly at the shops. But yes, I tend to suck at multiplayers. When me and my friend had finished our battles in Company of Heroes, my score was something like 20+ losses, 1 win. Them recorded sessions were quite humiliating...

If indeed the Fallout Online ever surfaces, and it doesn't suck, maybe enough villagers will shamble in to spread the village there. :)

How about 'despondent and bleeding.'  I could accept that.

First, I'd like you to poke yourself in your right eye...

I play with the Straight Dope group on Steam.

There are people who regularly kick my ass, but it's all fun. And no one ever rubs it in. They've been doing regular games for about a year now. I started about two months ago or so, and though they host 3 nights a week, I typically am only on about 5 nights out of the month. So I'm pretty much a noob still.
All right, I’ve been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man whose gonna burn your house down – with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

Hi, I joined this forum because I was playing Fallout 2 (Which is one of my favorite games) and encountered 'The Unwashed Villagers attacking a Spammer'. It was kind of awesome. I don't know yet what level that former glory was on, but I'll try to support the community as much as possible.

Imagine 'Former Glory' as a shining sun, beaming down on happy and carefree  (and insane) Villagers, sharing joys and tribulations, jokes and barbs, girlfriends and---- ok, maybe not that---- dwelling in a world of wonder, free from spam and She Who Must Not Be Named, with unlimited barrels of beer, and free passes to the Vestibule (assuming you met certain criteria, which mostly just consisted of being born female), and where Darkness was not only ignored but pointed and laughed at frequently.

But now...  I guess you have to read this: Despair...

I have a feeling that we're never going to attain our former glory since much of the zeitgeist that created the Village and sustains it has faded with time in favor of new things.  However, I don't see us ever going away.  I imagine we'll sort of be like WebTV, we're still around, but we keep a low profile and people are surprised when they find us.

Of course, I could be wrong.  Maybe we need to reinvent the Village to appeal to a wider audience and get some more publicity.  Fallout fandom is kind of a small niche demographic all things considered.  Maybe we need a website and need to expand our advertised focus into other games and forms of entertainment.  I know we do that now, but most people who've heard of us who aren't members probably think, "they're that group of message board posters who got that spammer booted back in '98".  We need publicity.

Alternatively, we could draw straws, and the loser has deliberately botch an assassination attempt against a high-profile political figure.  The ensuing media frenzy will drive new members to our site and give us the opportunity to talk about how the incident makes us feel and get us even more press.  The gunman, or gunwoman, will most likely spend the rest of their life in prison or a mental hospital, but it's for the greater good.

I love the assassination attempt idea even more than I hate politicians.. no wait.. I love it exactly the same.

My current strategy for the game is that I have an overall goal with it. Right now I am planning on how I can divide the task into smaller, releasable bits. That are playable, yet not a complete game.

My biggest concern (as always) is graphics.. Which is not my biggest talent.. unless people like abstract art in the games, of course.

But I have a plan to work around this limitation.

I think maybe part of the problem is that we don't really have anything to talk about any more.  Back when we were a young board, we had the Fallout series, and then as we moved past that, we had the fact that a significant percentage of the posters liked writing, and the internet wasn't full of fanfiction yet.  I mean, fuck, I clearly remember posting some poems that maybe weren't totally terrible, and some poems that definitely were totally completely fucking terrible.  The village was nice about it though!

Communities need something to gather around.  In my stupid opinion, the Village's problem is that we really don't have a focal point any more.  However, that's not a problem that's easily fixed!  Nobody wants the Village to become some dumbass HEY 15 YEAR OLDS POST POETRY AND NOTHING ELSE place, but I don't know what the fuck else there is to bond about.  Communities need to have something that defines them and draws them together; we don't really have anything like that any more besides nostalgia.  It's a pain!

I'm freaking out
Nowhere near my place and I
Know that they've seen me now

I think we may have shot ourselves in the foot by moving the board every couple of years without keeping an archive of the old one.  It makes it difficult to have a sense of our history when we have no record of it beyond the rapidly fading memories of our older members.  Is there any way to get the archives up and running again?

I have an archieve of two older boards backed up on my computer. My dream is to try to convert the data to the new version of the forum and merge it with this one, but that is not as easy as it sounds.

An alternate plan could be to install two more databases and run them alongside the new board as readonly.
