Despair
« on: April 04, 2011, 11:00:30 PM »

The vestibule had fallen into a sad state of disrepair; dust on the tables, a glass fallen onto the floor, the cot disheveled and unmade.  There was not so much a smell of decay but more just a faint scent of loneliness, perhaps with a few shadows of despair in the corners.  Nothing here at all anymore.  Nothing.

He walked out into the Village street, and saw a scene straight out of a 50's western.  Black and white, empty, a tumbleweed or two the only traffic to be seen.  Empty... noiseless..  gray...

Glancing over at the Bastard Bar, he saw the door slightly ajar; perhaps there was promise there.  But no... the door was not so open as it was just broken, hanging by a single hinge.  Walking across the hardwood floor, his footsteps echoed quietly off the walls, reinforcing the loneliness, and accenting the already cool room to a bitter chill.  The sounds of Villagers laughing and singing, the glasses ringing together, the boisterous conversations... all now muted to a soft, haunting echo, heard only in some deep recess of his mind.

Again, nothing but hollow memories and dry, bitter tears.  Nothing for him here; nothing for anyone.  He sat in one of the ancient chairs, the small creaking sounded disproportionally loud in the huge empty room.  He looked around sadly.  The pictures behind the bar had faded badly; dust and fly specks covered the mirror.  A small ghost bar in a small forgotten ghost town; nothing left... and nothing to come.

He got up slowly and left the bar, turning only once to look behind him.  The dark, empty barroom was not an image he wished to carry with him, but unfortunately it would be an image he would not be able to forget.

Turning away from the Cathedral, he walked slowly to the outskirts of the Village, still hoping for some something; some sound, some glint, anything that would suggest even a glimmer of life.  But by the time he reached the edge of the Park, he had heard nothing more than the low wail of the wind, and was accompanied only by the occasional dead leaf caught in a small whirlwind.  Still nothing... still no promise... no hope.

He walked out of the Village without once turning to look back.

How did you manage to make that sadder than it already is?

Sorry to see you leaving, and I can't say I don't understand why you are.

Before you go, please sign this agreement so you won't sue when I make a game about the Unwashed Village one day ;-)

Sorry to see you leaving...

It was an allegory; a parable; a figment.

My only regret about the story is that I forgot to include the ghosts of Daisy and Junkyard Dog.  That would have made it WAY sadder.

I'm glad this is only symbolic.  One of our esteemed elders leaving would surely be a deathknell to the Village's already-traumatized morale, and we can't abide that.  Also, someone might miss you.   :)

Also, new forum rule: No fictional leaving. In fact, no leaving at all.

*kicks Chuc in the fictionals*

*then kicks him in the Endowments*  (sorry, private joke from another board; it would take way too long to explain.  But it would still hurt)

The ancient chair should have been headbytes, if you can manage to wrest it from Tink's lair that is.

:P

Assuming anyone remembers that, lol.

More like esteemed Eldest.

Great read.
