God damn scientists with their facts and their logic
« on: August 08, 2007, 10:24:59 PM »
Apparently Douglas Adams was wrong.  =(

Article is 'Can you survive in space without a space suit?'
http://www.slate.com/id/2171522/?GT1=10346

Basically it says that taking a deep breath before being shot into space, as Adams recommends to ensure living up to 30 seconds, is the worst thing you can do.

Well, all I have to say to that is

BLASPHEMY
I fall and I leap and
I'm freaking out
Nowhere near my place and I
Know that they've seen me now

But basically, the best advice is: DON'T BLOODY DO IT!

Seriously. Use protection people. That's what it's there for.

Anyone remember that scene in "Event Horizon"?  I always figured that was a fairly realistic depiction of what being in space without a suit would look like, and you know, feel like.  In other words, I don't really see myself doing that because my buddies dared me to, but if I wound up on a ship that was possessed by a homicidal entity from hell, then yeah...

Great movie.

A similar movie, though completely unrelated to this thread, is Solaris.

I had a hard time following Solaris. Not because of the plotline really but the texture of the movie was really sparse. Everything was open, large, bright, lot of space between dialogue. It was like a great plotline being slowly revealed by someone having a stroke.

I watched about oh 30 minutes of that and turned it off.

The people on the ship acted like they were on lithium or pot.
Will I get Night Owl points for quitting but not as much for getting fired?
Will I still be a member of the Owl's Pals? I'd hate to turn in my card. It's got a real owl feather under the lamination and everything.

Night Owl: Oh, indeed. I quit many a job ...better than being fired. You can keep your card... in fact, you get double points for quitting!

Sounds like Kubrick's 2001.
All right, I’ve been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man whose gonna burn your house down – with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!
