Has anybody had any experience with customising linux installs / installing xbmc on cortex A8/A9 systems?  If anyone has is there much point going down this route or should I just forget this and just go for a traditional x86 platform?

Don't know much about this, but the XBMC team have just made a release for Android-on-Arm, so that might be some good. You'll have to compile it from source for the mo, but they promise a version in the Google Play store as soon as they have the bugs worked out.
I am thinking of changing my title to "He who must only be mentioned in passing".

Thanks Xerxes, I'm keeping my eyes on a few of these projects, basically I need something that looks like an Apple TV to molify my wife but has a decent level of customisation in a low power package.
