« on: October 11, 2007, 01:22:57 AM »
earlier i went to a  thing about studying abroad. has anyone here (besides tank) studied abroad or know anything about it? i really would like to go to england and study, even if only for a semester. but i'm still kinda unsure. and then when i figure it out what are the differences (major differences) if i go for a semester or a full year?

pros and cons?

I think Bluecross has. Mentioned something about 'gams' too.
Will I get Night Owl points for quitting but not as much for getting fired?
Will I still be a member of the Owl's Pals? I'd hate to turn in my card. It's got a real owl feather under the lamination and everything.

Night Owl: Oh, indeed. I quit many a job ...better than being fired. You can keep your card... in fact, you get double points for quitting!

Yeh, but I'm pretty sure 'abroad' is two words.

Well, if you come over to old Blighty to study, make sure you've got cash, and plenty of it to live on - you'll find here somewhat more expensive than what you're probably used to and since the dollar is so weak against the pound right now it just compounds the problem even further.

I believe it's $2.03 to £1 at the moment.

according to the brochure i just looked at it will cost $9,000-13,000 living expenses and up to $20,000 tuition. that's less than what i'm paying now. assuming $600 plane tickets and going only for one semester... its still some less than what i'm paying now.

i'd try and get into an old established university like Aberdeen or Stirling who depend on a lot of overseas students like yourselves so they'll know how to treat you nice and make sure you're ok when you're here....possibly to the detriment of home grown students but i wont get into that just now.

i'd also suggest coming for the year cause you can take the time in between to travel further afield and do some touring so what Petrach said: Bring lots of money

I do believe World War II was a conflict and not a study abroad program... I'd have to check the records tho.

My brother-in-law studied abroad at Aberdeen (and all I got was a lousy T-shirt). He liked it a lot.

All right, I’ve been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man whose gonna burn your house down – with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

Aberdeen would be a great place to study, accomodation is proving a nightmare just now because of a student demographic shift though.  I work and study at Aberdeen and by next year I should be taking my teaching post-grad here too.  The only issue here would be the massive cost of living in Aberdeen, eating out tends to cost double that of a city like Glasgow so you'd probably go over that projected cost of living budget.

I  would love to have studied abroad, just so that I could SAY I've studied abroad.

How far does one have to go before its considered "abroad"? I mean, for some it might be just a lil hop, while for others its AAAAGES away.
That seems unfair to me.

I studied abroad!!! I did it for a summer though, and I went to a Non-English speaking country (Ecuador). It was AWESOME. I happened to be there during the World Cup, and last year Ecuador did pretty well, so it was especially fun.

Ecuador is literally the perfect place to go for language immersion OR just for study-abroad in general. Their Spanish is easy to understand (no regional dialects and they speak pretty slowly), the people are small-town charmers, and the culture is amazing. Plus there is so much geographical diversity - in a country the size of Colorado, there's the Amazon rain forest, beaches, the Galapagos Islands, the Andes mountains, and jungle wetlands. AND they use the American dollar, so there's no currency conversion, the government is stable, there are Incan burial grounds as well as your typical Latin-America Catholic cathedrals, and plane tickets are much cheaper versus tickets to Europe. AND the time zone is the same!

Basically, I think you should go to South America. Forget Europe. ;)
