Well, I think I'm going to write about a guy who's living a pretty normal life until pay phones start to ring for no reason when he walks by them. He won't answer them for a while and they'll ring more and more and then one day he'll look out the window and the city will be installing a bank of pay phones on the curb in front of his apartment and he'll be like OMFG and then I dunno what will happen because it's not november yet.
I COPYRIGHT THAT IDEA YOU BASTARDS
As to what you should write about I have no idea. Pick something that interests you and then open a dictionary or encyclopedia at random and point to a word with your eyes closed, then try to combine whatever interests you and whatever word you point at. Point at two or three words for added challenge.
Alternatively just start writing about some random generic person in whatever genre you like (Joe Schmoe if you like contemporary fiction, Faceless Peasant if you like fantasy, etc) then write as fast as you can and see what happens.
When I saw the guy who founded the thing, Chris Baty, he read some of his dialogue from a past NaNoWriMo, and it was literally like
"The weather is nice today," said Rob.
"Yes, it is," said Daniel. "The sun is warm."
"Yes," said Rob, "August is my favorite month."
Then he like rolled around on the floor about how bad it was, but the point was that if you're going for a 50,000 word first draft in 30 days some of it is GUARANTEED to suck, but who cares? Some will probably be super awesome, and that's what revising is for!
