What is up with a dog kicking one rear leg over and over when i rub its belly?

I don't own dogs, but my friends who room together own several. Most of the dogs have this weird habit where if you start rubbing or scratching their belly they'll start pumping one rear leg in the air in a rhythmic, sometimes cyclical motion. They even do it when they're asleep, but they don't wake up. What's up with that?!

dunno, but i've gotten my ex to do it on more than one occasion. he growls when he realizes he's doing it but then i scratch under his chin and he whimpers. it's utterly adorable

It's something to do with nerve clusters, a bit like accupressure, it's been quite a while since I found out about it so past googling it tat's all I've got.
