Unwashed Village / I just learned something... maybe...
« on: June 18, 2020, 06:27:12 PM »
I learned that FPP is 'First Person Perspective' (an opposed to FPS - 'First Person Shooter')

Don't normally like FPS.

But I have always liked (the original) Fallout.

So... is Fallout (original) FPP?

And does anyone like Deus Ex GOTY? (now on GoG for 97 cents).

Long time, no post! :o

Which brings me to my Question:

Does Metro Exodus remind anyone of Fallout?

Unwashed Village / If Trump is booted out of office,
« on: May 12, 2017, 08:14:02 AM »
it will leave a vast hole which is currently filled with hilarious, insightful, acidic, and brilliant commentaries, cartoons, articles, blogs and forum posts.

I'd be willing to give those all up.

Just found this on the official whitehouse. gov page (it lists the current White House Staff salaries):
https://www.whitehouse.gov/forreviewstaff-salaries

Guess what?  Nothing there.  What was I thinking, expecting I would actually find useful information?

So then I checked another section (Ethics Pledge Waivers).  Guess what?  Nothing there either.  Not a surprise, actually.

I've been watching the news covering Trump's visit to the White House and Capitol Hill.

And I''m thinking there may yet be some hope...

Trump looks like the proverbial deer in the headlights.  He has all the demeanor of a man who had not expected to win, and finding out now that it is a reality, may now believe he has gotten in over his head.

All subjective opinion by me, of course.  But if he actually has some humility, if he actually understands the awesome responsibility he has been handed, and makes some good appointments, hires some good advisors, and takes small steps instead of broad and swift sweeping changes...  then perhaps we may be able wade through this.

It's the first glimmer of optimism I've had for some time.

Unwashed Village / "The Failure of Democracy"
« on: November 09, 2016, 06:54:52 PM »
That would be the title of the next book I'm not going to write, adding to the pile of other books I haven't written.

There have been a lot of conciliatory speeches and nice 'we must move forward' comments, etc.

I am not on board.

The fucking Republicans created the illusion of a bad economy and poorly run government caused by the Obama administration.  They did everything they could to stall, defeat, and undo any legislation in order to create the non-illusion of dysfunctional government, and they did it starting six or seven years with vicious attacks on Obama, all orchestrated by a cabal of high level Republicans dedicated to disparaging the system and Obama.  Never mind if they brought themselves down as well; they were already down, but they found a way to take everyone down with them, creating a huge dissatisfaction and anger against the US government.

"It takes two to tango,"  some might say, trying to deflect some of the blame to the Democrats.  But "it only takes one to stop the dance", and the Republicans left the dance floor years ago.

That's the anger part.

The sad part is that so many bought into the Trump rhetoric, and I'm going to get personal now.  The largest demographic he won was the white non-educated males.  So yes, I'm saying he won the election due to the ignorance and stupidity of Americans.

He's a sleaze, and I really doubt he will be able to hide that personality attribute for long.  Whether it leads to just embarrassment for the US or to horrible economic situations or to dangerous international political conflicts, I don't know.   But I have little hope for anything good in the next four years.

And for all you Trump supporters out there, I will leave you with this:
"for whatever one sows, that will he also reap."

Unwashed Village / Americans (some of them) are so stupid...

I'm gonna get my Finnish citizenship and move to Raahe.

Trump now thinks SNL (Saturday Night Live) is part of a media conspiracy and wants to cancel the show.  Guiliani claims that Dead People vote Democratic, and that some of the elections are rigged.

No wonder people look with disdain at Americans.  We deserve a lot of it.

Unwashed Village / The Presidential Debatabacle
« on: October 10, 2016, 07:14:34 PM »
Kudos to the Village for not bringing this up earlier.

But I just can't help myself.

It's not so much that I am a Hillary supporter but instead that I find it appalling than anyone could support Trump.  I can understand not supporting Hillary; I'm fine with that.

But there don't seem to be enough disparaging words to describe Trump's behavior.   The ability to ignore, overlook or deflect his incredible flaws by his supporters is...  well... unbelievable.

Ugh...  ugh... ugh...

Yes, I've ranted greatly against Microsoft before.  But this is the New Improved Windows 10 Rant.

Windows was first introduced in 1985.  Yes, 1985!  32 fucking years and they still can't get it right!  Most horrible OS ever.

The latest catalyst for this tirade was Microsoft's re-introduction of the infamous Blue Screen of Death.  Here is the Windows 10 version:

Unbelievable.  I'm just merrily browsing, editing, coding, etc and wham! Let's reboot because "We know more than you do!"

Thirty years on and they still are clueless about memory management, program and application isolation, etc. etc. etc.  There is no doubt in my mind the whole Windows development is driven by marketing, and to hell with technical improvements.  The hubris displayed by the developers should be criminal.

32 YEARS!  I mean, really...

It seems that Trump could learn something from snails.

BBC has cool science articles.

Trump is in actual possession of the One Ring.

That pretty much explains everything.

GoG has it on sale now (enhanced edition) and it does seem like the kind of RPG that I really like.

But you guys know better than most so fill me in.

It does rain a bit in Oregon...

Feb 19, 2016 around 9:30am

From top to bottom is about 280 miles, from the Oregon-Washington border to a bit north of the California border to the south.

Our back yard, which is normally a nice long green dog run, looks more like a swamp.  Water can't drain through or run off fast enough.

Weather forecast for the next ten days?  Rain.  Big surprise, eh?

Unwashed Village / Fun with English
« on: January 03, 2016, 12:20:38 AM »
If you know someone just learning English (and especially if they are non-Europeans), have them read the following sentence:

He had a rough cough after he couldn't come through with the dough to pay for the bough in the trough.

Pronunciation guide for those who need help:
cough
[kof]

through
[throo]

rough
[ruhf]

dough
[doh]

bough
[bou]

trough
[trawf]
