Unwashed Village / One...two...five

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/5018294/Pub-evacuated-after-Monty-Python-prop-mistaken-for-grenade.html

Bomb disposal teams were called in and buildings evacuated after workmen mistook a Monty Python film prop for a hand grenade.

By Matthew Moore

Bomb experts realised that the cause of the scare was a copy of the 'Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch'

Water company engineers spotted the object when they lifted up a fire hydrant cover during work on a street in Shoreditch, east London.

The road was cordoned off and a nearby pub was evacuated amid fears that the "grenade" could explode.

Unwashed Village / Nacho Libre
« on: March 16, 2009, 11:48:32 AM »
Watched this for the first time on Sunday and it was a funny movie. Something about it kept reminding me of Napolean Dynamite though and I kept thinking that maybe the same guy directed those movies. Turns out I was right. It looked to be shot in the same way and the main character's buddy in Nacho had a lot of the same mannerisms as Pedro from Napolean.

Unwashed Village / Old school ER fans?
« on: March 14, 2009, 11:18:49 AM »
I was a huge fan of ER back in the day. I own the first 4 seasons on DVD and may eventually expand that to seasons 5 and 6 which were the show's true final days IMHO. However I've payed attention to the episodes on this last season somewhat as they are bringing original characters back here and there. This episode via Hulu is a real gem for that reason. Doug Ross, Carol Hathaway (Ross now), Peter Benton and John Carter all make appearances.

Enjoy.  8)

So am I the last to know about this exquisitely talented and beautiful creature? Hmm? Am I?  :stunned:

Totally found her by accident on youtube because she played with the Scorpions at a live show in another video. I wasn't searching for hot asian violinists at all. Nope. *innocent look*

Unwashed Village / Empire: Total War - got it
« on: March 09, 2009, 06:41:12 PM »
They've changed quite a bit from the other games. They say they took out a lot of micromanagement but ,at a first glance at the world map, it sure doesn't seem that way. In the old games each region had one city. Take over that city and you've taken over the region. Now each region has a city but also forts, farms, schools, docks and other various buildings that can be destroyed or captured (presumably). I literally have just started up a game, felt overwhelmed and too tired to figure it all out, and exited the game. I'm sure I'll get into it when I'm more rested and ready to but on my learnin cap.

However there is one aspect of the game that I was totally caught off guard by. I never expected multi-player to be anything I'd be interested in but they've done a great job with it. I played last night with a couple of Dwarves (Glarm and Undac) and we had a blast for hours. We'd just setup quick battles on land or sea with us vs the computer. It was carnage.

In one land battle, I ended up having nothing left but five artillery units but we still won the fight. In a naval battle. Glarm's ship was being boarded by the enemy. Undac, seeking to be helpful, decided to fire a full broad side cannon barrage into the mix. It would have been fine had he not (apparently) ignited the kegs of gunpowder on the enemy ship. It created quite the spectacular explosion. Glarm's ship, being right next to it, lit up like a torch that had been dipped in gasoline. His little doods didn't even have time to jump overboard.  ;D

So, I'll try to get into the single player campaigns a bit sometime soon and I'll come back here to give my opinion of that portion of the game. I can safely say though that the multi-player portion is quite fun if you are up for some fighting.

Also a quick note. If you tried the demo just be aware that it had lots of issues graphically and otherwise that seem to have been pretty much ironed out for release. However one of my friends did lose a couple of saved games that he had put quite a few hours into due to some bug. So waiting for a patch  might not be a bad idea.

Unwashed Village / So I finally saw Wall-E
« on: March 05, 2009, 08:19:07 PM »
My step-dad got the 3 disc DVD set a couple of days ago and we watched it last night. Definitely much better than Cars IMO.

The coolest thing though was a one and a half hour extra on the DVD that tells the story of how Pixar came to be. It had some very interesting info in it like John Lasseter being fired from Disney after he made a feature film based on the Brave Little Toaster. Some head of Disney came to screen the movie, never watched it, and stormed out after saying that there was no point to computer animation if it wasn't cheaper or faster than the old way. The movie was shelved and never released btw.

They also apparently did a massive do over on Toy Story 2 in a very limited amount of time because Pixar felt the movie sucked but Disney was going to release it as is. Lasseter hadn't been a part of the project and it was supposed to go straight to video but then Disney decided to release it theatrically. Thus the reworking of it occurred.

They showed a clip of Jessie's song and all the people they showed talking about that part of the movie (all men btw) were obviously emotional about it. Tom Hanks said that he and Tim Allen saw the movie for the first time together and there they were, two forty year-old men crying because of an abandoned cowgirl doll. I was right there along with him crying (again) because of just a short clip of the song.  ;)  As Lasseter emotionally summed it up, "At that moment you know that no one's thinking 'Well this is just a cartoon. This is just a bunch of pencil drawings on paper or this is just a bunch of computer data.' No, these characters are live and they're real."

And that is what makes Pixar movies so great.

Q&A with Alissa Hamilton
What you're really pouring from that carton of orange juice
By Devra First
February 22, 2009

What could be simpler than a glass of orange juice? The beverage holds a place in the pantheon of wholesome American breakfast foods, on equal footing with toast, cereal, and eggs. It's pure and natural, ads tell us, and we buy both the sentiment and the product. More than 620 million gallons of orange juice are sold per year in the United States, according to market research from Nielsen.

Author Alissa Hamilton would have us take another look at the glass on the breakfast table.

It's sad that even something as seemingly simple as juicing oranges to give us juice has been so over processed that we'd be better off doing it ourselves at home.

http://michellemalkin.com/2009/02/23/document-drop-the-truth-about-acorns-foreclosure-poster-child/

So ACORN helps a woman illegally break into her old house that she lost to foreclosure and makes a video of the act to put up on Youtube. The first funny bit is that the house no longer belongs to the bank. It's been sold. So they broke into some other person's house. The second funny bit is that nobody in the media who has been reporting on this has done the slightest background check on the woman who those evil vicious banks took advantage of. Malkin comes through in spades as usual. Here's part of what she found -

In February 2008, Baltimore City Circuit Court records show a second foreclosure action was filed.

She had two years to pay what she owed. She failed to comply.

When she told local TV station WJZ that her evil bank raised her mortgage by $300 (”The mortgage went up $300 in one month”), she’s talking about the amount in arrears that she agreed to pay back.

While she was reneging on her mortgage IOUS, she managed to collect rent on her basement (for which she was taken to court) and rack up a criminal record on charges of theft and second degree assault:

Video of the initial act of "civil disobedience" is at the bottom of her blog entry.

Unwashed Village / Empire: Total War trailer

Don't know how many here have played the Total War games but they are one of my favorite series of games.  This one sees the battles take place fully in the gunpowder era (Medieval TW saw just a hint and the units all sucked) and they FINALLY have opened naval battles to the battle screen (instead of just automatically determining a winner).
