Unwashed Village / Re: Who did you vote for?
« on: November 06, 2008, 01:10:43 PM »
Well some would argue that buying into the system with a vote is ensuring that nothing better will ever come along.

I disagree.  If you see something better, by all means, support it.  If you feel so strongly about the current system, then start a movement to change it - voice your ideas, your alternatives, see who else agrees, and debate your solution with those who don't, refine it.  That is how change happens.   Well, that or revolution, but you get the idea.

Simply refusing to vote won't make things any better.  In fact, I doubt anyone will really care.  I'm not saying you have to agree with the status quo, but I do believe that you should use whatever power the existing system gives you.  And that means either finding the least objectionable candidate and voting for them, or taking your ideas on the road and giving like-minded people another candidate.

Anyway, just my two bits.

To those who choose not to vote...

The only justification that I can think of for not voting is that you know so little about the candidates and their policy stances that you actually have no preference (or at the very least, a highly uninformed one).  Outside of this, I believe that you should vote.  Personally, I don't believe that the representative democracy system that is used by much of the first world (even those with figurehead monarchies like the UK and its colonies) is a very good system.  It breeds a situation where legal entities (ie corporations) with no conscience and lots of money actually have more influence than any real person.  To me, this is bad.  However, I still vote, because this is the system of government that we currently have, and until I (or, more likely, someone much smarter than I) comes up with a better system, we're stuck with this one.  And so we do what we can.  That means voting.  And asking your local politician questions.

Until something better comes along, it's what we CAN do.  Therefore, I believe it's what we SHOULD do.  Otherwise how will things ever get any better?  Or even, how will they not continue to get worse?

I think there are quite a few other non-americans who are just as glad as I am to see that Obama has won.  Whilst the virtues of having such a multicultural president are probably best left for the debate forum, I firmly believe that he will do a better job than his opponent.

I often wonder what the world would look like today if we had just had two terms of Al Gore, to be followed by Obama.

Anyway, I think it will be hard for Obama to live up to the expectations, but he seems to me to be a cut above the mediocrity of recent years so I'm sure he'll have a damn good swing at it!

*Gives Doomsie soothing hugs*

I know how you feel... I get the same way with people who have no understanding of basic grammar or who use the wrong homophone in their writing (their/there/they're, too, to, two, etc).  Particularly since one of my previously favourite magazines is especially guilty of this at the moment.

I have found it helps if you learn to bask in your own superiority.  Obviously you don't want to take it too far, but just imagine while you forced to deal with this lesser person that in the post-apocalyptic dystopia that we are all expecting to eventuate within our lifetime, you will be a much more valued member of your chosen little community.  Because you can speak/write/fight/whatever properly. And they can't.  And that's why you're the best!

Ummmm.... did I go off topic there towards the end?  Sorry.

Another vote for Abby.

We have a very popular variety show here in Oz simply called Rove (after the host, Rove McManus).  In his interviews, Rove usually gives his guests the opportunity to "win $20 in 20 seconds" by answering a series of rather odd questions.  The final question is invariably "Who would you turn gay for?" (or "who would you turn straight for?" if the interviewee is known to be gay already).  As such this has prompted many Australians (yes, even guys) to ponder this question, myself included.

My answer to this question has always been David Tennant.

He is distinctly odd looking from many angles (especially when he is being himself, not the Dr) but his presence just makes that irrelevant.

edit:  It should be noted that the character Abby Sciuto is MUCH more attractive than the actress who plays her (Pauley Perrette).  Oh, and Tilda has a great voice.

Uh-oh...

I just heard (unconfirmed rumour) that head writer, Russell T Davies is leaving too!  This could be a significant problem.  We all remember what happened to West Wing when Aaron Sorkin left.

By all means, come to Australia!  But Sydney?  Really?  Don't get me wrong, Sydney's fine, I suppose, if you happen to like stupid traffic and idiotically high density living.  Sydney and Melbourne are both too big for my liking, but they are where all the trendy people live (at least, those who like everyone to know that they're trendy).

I grew up in Canberra.  It's a lovely town (only about 300,000 people last time I checked) and 80 or 90% of the state is national parkland.  You get more of a feel of the Aussie flora and fauna just driving between suburbs than you ever will in the bigger cities.  It does get cold (but it's only a couple of hours' drive to the ski slopes in winter if that's your thing) but the houses are built for it.  However, as Doomsie accurately pointed out, it's as boring as bat-shit.  A great place to raise a family though.  I could go on because I know it better than other cities, but I'll stop myself here.  Oh, and without wanting to hurt anyone's sensibilities... God gets his drinking water from Canberra.

Having never been to Adelaide, Hobart or Darwin I can't comment on those cities beyond the commonly held opinions that most Aussies have of those places... Darwin is just too hot and humid, don't try breathing there unless you have gills.  Adelaide is pretty, but inanely dull.  Hobart (and indeed all of Tasmania) is gorgeous, but cold, and somewhat isolated.

Perth is the capital of Western Australia - a huge state that occupies the western third of the country and contains mostly desert.  I have relatives over there, so I've had occasion to visit a couple of times.  If I could choose where I wanted to live in Oz, Perth comes a close second (Canberra still wins, even though the weather depresses me, because it's my home).  It is a very neat (tidy) city and the people are much friendlier than they are in Canberra - as a general rule.  The downside is that it is just so far away from everything!  Mind you, that could be a good thing.

And then we come to Brisbane... about an hour's drive away from Surfer's Paradise (aka the Gold Coast) and where I currently reside.  For me it's a nice blend of big city facilities and small town space.  It has a reasonably good public transport system and the weather is divine, however, we are in the midst of a drought at the moment which translates into domestic water restrictions.  Having said that, I have never come close to hitting the limit, and it really is quite easy to be just that little bit more environmentally friendly.  There's a fantastic indie scene here (not to be confused with Indy, which is on the Gold Coast) and the girls take MUCH better care of themselves than they do in cities further south (where they're rugged up for a goodly portion of the year).  Seriously, it's a tropical oasis with indoor plumbing.  The humidity knocks me around a little bit in summer, but it's tolerable.

Oh, and I think the Aussie dollar is currently trading at about US$0.60 which is good for you.

Anyway, that's probably more info than you wanted... I'm just trying to get my post count up without anyone noticing.  ;)

DT was the best Doctor since Tom Baker.

I seem to recall reading that Tom Baker hailed DT as the best Doctor ever.  (and he was right)

Having said that, I was incredibly impressed with Eccleston when he revived the series.  I thought, "Yay! Dr Who is back!" quickly followed by, "this guy is fantastic!", then Tennant just blew him away.  Maybe the next doctor will do the same to Tennant.

Yeah... I know, not very likely, but hope springs eternal.

I hope that the next Dr at least does the series credit.  The writing lately has been superlative and there's still a lot of story threads hanging loose so it would be a shame for a poor casting choice to let the show down at this point.

Yes, I'm still waiting (speculatively) for the return of the time lords, Gallifrey and Romana.

Glad to hear you'll be ok.

I'm not sure that I agree with the war, but I always support the troops...  I would cower in the corner and cry like a girl if I were in your shoes.

Look after yourself mate.

I migrated here from the Interplay board shortly before the release of Fallout 2 (which would put it around 1998 I think).  I saw Lerk, Doombot and Buffy talking on the FO2 board and they mentioned the village a couple of times.  If memory serves, it was a post from Buffy, combined with a moderately slow day at work which led me to actually check this place out.  I have no idea what the post said, just this amorphous feeling that it was Buffy who said it.  *shrug*

I started out calling myself "Harry, the Bunny Master" (Wasteland reference) but Love Bunny took exception so I changed it to Bubonic.  Then TSSR took exception to that, stating that he was the official rat of the UV.  I started thinking about changing my name again, but I still haven't come up with a name that I really like any better.

I left the village after the release of FO2 because of all the unannounced spoilers, but returned shortly after I had finished the game.

In their infinite wisdom, the villagers have never even considered giving me any position of power.  *evil, maniacal laugh*

The old ICQ or IRC chats used to crack me up though.

hehehe...  Sorry 'Bot.  I didn't mean to shatter your illusions.

Aussie folk music is for bush hippies.  There are some iconic songs and bands (The Bushwhackers, Redgum, Rolf Harris, etc) that I believe all Aussies should be able to recognise since it does reflect a part of our culture, and often a part of our history that isn't otherwise recorded succinctly.

Having said that, for me a better reflection on the Aussie condition and modern social commentary can be found in the pub rock scene (Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Hunters and Collectors, Spy vs Spy, Gangajang, Hoodoo Gurus, Weddings Parties Anything, Men At Work, Split Enz, Australian Crawl, etc, etc).  Admittedly none of these I've named (to my knowledge) are still touring, but any 2 or 3-piece hired by your local will play many of their songs over the course of an evening.  Plus, they rock harder.

Ok... I've spent an hour or two between that last line and this one listening to and researching a few of the bands listed above, and I have to stop myself before I start typing a long-winded admiration of Hunters and Collectors in general and their album Jaws of Life in particular (although Demon Flower is just as good... and Ghost Nation isn't bad either... Nor is Cut...).  If you're interested check them out.
