Annual check-in time.

I found post-grad school job around Portland (OR) and have been settling-in like another yuppie transplant.

Meeting people isn't too bad here, and I'm thinking of buying a house in the near future.
It's a pretty nice place to live, so far.

Beyond that, I think I'll need some hobbies for when the current storms in US politics, cryptocurrency etc. run their course.
The world will be so boring again.

Congrats on the PhD.

Sorry to hear you had friends in that fire. I'd be curious to hear the opinions of those who were affiliated with that community as to their take on the whole fiasco, though it's probably a bit too soon for any involved to be in the mood for that sort of thing.

Emotions are still raw, and the investigation into the cause is ongoing.

That being said, concerns had been raised about that space for some time as a live music venue.
I've never been there, as people running many of the events I'm typically interested in had blacklisted it.

Many artists who run these events or spaces have day jobs as electricians, sound engineers, technical staff at conference centers etc., so there's often a reasonable standard enforced.

Unfortunately, a number of prominent spaces have been closed or gone silent over the past year, as gentrification creeps into remote Oakland and SF neighborhoods.
New bars opening in Oakland have absorbed some of the load, though more obscure events have been pushed to shadier places.

...And the bungee cord snaps back.

It's been a numbing week, having gotten another birthday out of the way and receiving the final sign-off on my PhD.
The degree will be officially conferred next month, and I'll be briefly assuming a postdoc role while hunting for a "real-world" industry position.

All of this a few days after losing a friend and many acquaintances in the Oakland Ghostship fire, consoling other friends who were saved by running only a few minutes late.

I'm presently weighing my options on whether to remain in the Bay Area, or even the US, in the long-term.

Strange times.

Looking back, his check-ins over the past several years always carried an infectious optimism and remarkable perspective on mortality and the opportunities of life.

I regret never thanking him for sharing that struggle and joy with us.

RIP Kama.

Periodic check-in as the bungee-cord snaps back.

Traded Canada for the (mostly) sunny San-Francisco Bay Area, working towards a PhD in an overly-specific junction of engineering and the physical sciences.

I'm happy, hope you're happy too.

It's ironic. The once-obscure 1990s RPG series that spawned this community is now, globally, far larger ever.

And yet we're quieter than at any point since...the Interplay message boards?

And the bungee snaps back.

I've just moved to California (Bay Area) for grad school. In the past 2 years I finished my undergrad in the Toronto area, and interned in Alberta and France. Life is busy and frightening.

Thought I'd check in for my 10-year anniversary as a UV'er (Yikes!). I joined when I was 12.

Congrats.

I assume this means you'll be leaving London, and thus significantly boosting the villagers-per-capita count of the Grand River area.

Hi all,

I'm still alive, having temporarily relocated to France on an internship of sorts. Most of my free time and money has been steadily invested in a hypnotic combination of travel and drink.

This weekend sees me in London, where I hope to take in such flagship British cultural fare as double-decker buses, Big Ben, happy slapping, and Indian food. I've been told my adventure will be chronicled by the city's cutting-edge CCTV system, with a complimentary tape of my visit available for purchase at the departures terminal of Gatwick, between the Ryanair and Easyjet booths.

(Admittedly, much of my knowledge of the UK has its roots in Daily Mail articles posted for mockery in lefty blogs).

I'm open to any and all suggestions from Brit villages on what to see, do and have done to me in this global capital of culture.

Hope this finds you well,

- A.S.S.R.

Thank you all.

Though my recent relocation to Europa has barely left me with time to lurk, it's always nice to drop in here. Now to find a power adapter for that fancy North American TSTR...

Remember a guy who went by the name of Spektre?

We caught up through some social-networking/blog scheme, and coincidentally happen to be enrolled in the same faculty.

He registered here after word of the last meet.

(Not to be confused with the better known V13 guy, who rode in from London last year on a Greyhound of merriment)

While it's already a good several weeks into summer, I was wondering if another GTA get-together could take place sometime between mid-August/early-September (around the same time we had it last year).

Sushi, pubs, aimless downtown wandering - whatever you folks would be up for. It would likely be an evening or weekend thing, meeting up around a TTC station.

I'm currently taking a school term, but will be done and back in the area from the 17th right up to the first two weeks of September. In that period, I'll be open for pretty much any time or day of the week.

Shady_Guy had mentioned that he'd be relocating here at some point, though I'm not sure if he's arrived (he hasn't posted in a while). I can also spread the word to a member from the V13 days who's at my Uni.

So, would a repeat of last year's Queen St. crawl be possible?

Feel free to suggest dates, places and events. It would be nice to get more than 4 people this time around.

where in europe and how can i tag along?

Montpellier, in the south of France.

It's a university town, with various schools that do all sorts of foreign exchange or transfer programs. The French are pretty big on that sort of thing.

I'd be working for an institute that's affiliated with the main technical university.

Thanks.

The digital camera will definitely come along for this trip.

Once the contract comes through, I just need to figure out where I'll live and how I can get some health insurance coverage.

*Pokes Head In*

Stuff has been hectic at my end.

An offer has come up, and I might be relocating to Europe for an 8 month internship later this year.

The details are still in the works, but it's looking more likely than not at this point.

The flip side is, I'll be in school over the summer term.
