Post by: Night Owl on August 10, 2010, 11:19:14 PM
The message forum is sooooooooooo 2000's

Seriously, I bet a Facebook group would work really well.

Could always just do both, no reason to get rid of our roots. Some people aren't on facebook or wouldn't want to, just to be fair.

Not sure how it all works, but it might be possible to have a facebook page update with forum posts?

Works for me.

Uhhh...who wants to start one. As Chief Admin, it's my responsibility to delegate the real work to someone else.

Oh, and in case anyone wonders, my facebook page is:  http://www.facebook.com/hoopyfrood76

I'm already running the page for my theatre group.  On one hand that means I've got experience with it.  On the other hand it means I've already got one page to look after.

I think it's a great idea. Facebook already provides the same need the forum did in the late nineties.

Message sharing, links, banter, etc.

Also the traffic here is just a trickle.

Hah, this joomla powered facebook, linkedin, and myspace nonsense tis just a passing fad. Besides I hate facebook's terms of service and their approach to building community's.

Hey! Our first comment in 10 days!!!

Well, part of the problem with our lack of recent activity is that the URL http://www.unwashed.eu (http://www.unwashed.eu) still leads to that "Don't worry, we'll be back soon." message from Chucara rather than to the board, so it's possible that most of us don't know it's back up.

The other part of the problem is that the board was left out of commission for entirely too long to realistically hold on to all of its members, and I'm sorry to criticize the admins since I know they all have lives outside of maintaining this board, but it's true.  I'm guessing that a lot of our members still think the board is out of commission, (I only found out it was back up through random chance), or they have moved on to other things and luring them back might be difficult.  There's been a bit of a lapse in communication here regarding the state of the Village, and remedying that lapse would be a good step towards getting things running as they should again.

More to the point, I'm really not in favor of an Unwashed Facebook page replacing the forum outright, as I'm not entirely sure I want various people in my Facebook friends who aren't part of the UV social circle being able to read my prosaic essays on who was the superior Doctor Who sidekick or following my posted link to homoerotic Transformers fan-fiction that I really only intended to share with the UV for shock value.  My pastor and grandparents may not fully understand or appreciate the context.

You don't seriously mean get rid of the village do you? No mamis way! It would be a sad day to see the gates of the village close forever. This is still home for so many of us. No matter how busy life gets, I still think about my friends here and how much fun this place has been. It would be the equivalent of having someone bulldoze your house.

You wouldn't want a pissed off pixie on your hands would you?lol!

The Facebook idea is good, but closing the village? Think of all the homeless!

You're pretty when you're angry? hehe

And yeah, cause then we'd be Unwashed Homeless, and that just doesn't have the same ring to it does it?

The good news is that the Village seems to be gaining new members steadily. There's something fishy about them though...

That's part of the reason I don't want Facebook to replace the village. There's stuff I can post her that I can't or choose to post on Facebook.

Here everyone loves my Peter Pan Man photoshops and takes great delight in seeing what I'll come up next. Yet the 40 year old Mothers, old co-workers, might not feel the same.

Yeah, I'm deleting "those people". I don't take kindly to their kind.

Like I said before, if I any idea on how to get some activity back to the board, I'd gladly put in the time needed.. I just don't know what to do :(

I'm having a hard time thinking of something. I used to frequent another websites forum for a little while, but I even seldom post there, and only because it had a focus and was attached to a game.

I'm not sure how we could revive the flagging Village, I just know I don't want to see it go...even as inactive as it generally is.

I know I'm not around much, and have had breaks here and there in the history of the village...but it feels like it's always been there.

"I'm Not A Lawyer"

It's also frequently seen as IANAL "I Am Not A Lawyer".

I just read a blurb about LOL being added to OED.

There was a (probably urban legend) story about those who thought LOL meant Lots of Love:  a woman telegraphed (emailed?) her daughter:

"I'm sorry to tell you that your grandmother has passed away.  LOL"

I am not sure about that particular story, but my mum thought LOL meant Lots of Love until I explained it to her, so its plausible.
