Title: Britain's national shame
Post by: Xerxes on June 08, 2009, 01:38:28 AM
Britain has just elected a BNP MEP. In the Yorkshire and Humber euro constituency. Generations yet to be born will wonder why we elected fascists.

Guessing "BNP" is British National Party...MEP could be Member of English Parliament?

So, based on that and Xerxes' response to the event, I'd suspect that the Nationals are "Britain first" in their views, very old fashioned and generally anti-liberal.  Probably heavily against foreigners (particularly in terms of immigration) and frown upon all those teenagers with their long hair and their loud music.  They'd believe that the nation's future depends on a return to the old values, especially those of children being quiet, wives being quiet and foreigners being quiet a long way away.

All pure conjecture though.  I really have no idea.

EP likely refers to European Parliament since Britain recently elected an extreme-right wing politician to it, the first of his kind to hold that position.

Although, I don't quite understand how the European Parliament relates to each individual country's respective legislative bodies. The impression I have is that it's similar to how U.S. Congress relates to the state legislatures over here.

So I guess a U.S. equivalent would be if some state elected Pat Buchanan as U.S. Senator.

Sounds like a shift to the political right wasn't just a British thing

Nope, a lot of the right-wing parties got large boosts. It's basically a tendency throughout Europe, as we see the eastern workforces come in and knock down wages by quite a bit.

Funny thing is, they're usually very EU-skeptic as well, and often very socialist thinking (what we'd call social democrats, ie slightly left of the center in the political spectrum- aka, the European spectrum). But some of their nationalistic views place them as extreme right-wing, but their social politics have caused them to basically vanquish all the old anti-EU parties, who were generally considered left-wing, resulting in the right-wing parties taking the left-wing votes. Very extreme voter-switches tbh.

The BNP are the British National Party, a lot of nasty neo-fascists who among other things believe in kicking out all non-white Britons, and that a spell of one-party rule is what Britain needs. The MEP bit is Member of the European Parliament. Some influence over European Union policy, but the Commission has more.

One wanker does not soup a make.

The neo-nazi types don't get many votes around here, propably because of Finland's WW2 alliance to nazi germany, but the less radical "Finland to the finns" people  usually flock around the (lame translation) Basic Finn Party. These guys have had such magnificent personalities on their lists as the ex-professional wrestler/boxer Tony Halme aka Ludwig Borga, as well as Frederick, a has-been singer to whom I'm unfortunately distantly related. As I understand, Basic Finn Party's leader Timo Soini got a landslide of votes for the European Parliament, but I really couldn't care less, because it's a good thing to get that character out of Finland. :D
