Amazing potter guy

He's using an Asian method of throwing clay which involves throwing off of the top of a mound of clay. What's amazing to me is that he isn't spilling a drop of water. We use what amounts to a plastic bowl around our wheels to catch all of our spillage and believe me we need it. This guy isn't even messing up his pants which are touching the outside of the wheel.

Also he throws a lid for his teapot without even measuring it to get the size right.  :stunned:  Good grief I feel like an amateur after watching that.

Amazing!
Will I get Night Owl points for quitting but not as much for getting fired?
Will I still be a member of the Owl's Pals? I'd hate to turn in my card. It's got a real owl feather under the lamination and everything.

Night Owl: Oh, indeed. I quit many a job ...better than being fired. You can keep your card... in fact, you get double points for quitting!

All right, I’ve been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man whose gonna burn your house down – with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

If it's a fiery pit of death you may still end up with somethin.

I'm familiar with the Japanese style of throwing in that vid, aye - in my uni days we had a visiting lecturer called Takeshi Yasuda who used that technique. One of my good friends had also studied with him as a sort of apprentice before our course started, and had learned that style too - we had one Shinpo wheel and he always raced to use it :D

Not a style I (or any of the rest of my fellow students) ever got to grips with - we all remained firmly in the messy watery slip style of throwing it has to be said  :nice:

Always impressive to see though, the bowl-free Japanese style

So if you spend your life throwing pots (and whatever) do you basically end up without fingerprints?

Oddly enough, it can indeed mess with your fingerprints a bit, but it more sort of changes fingerprints rather than removing them.

Funky throwing styles and constant exposure to what amounts to fine sandpaper tends to result in smooth callouses, but they're not permanent, and your original prints will reassert themselves once more should you keep those pottery-based grinding pastes off your hands for a while. It's certainly a good idea not to wear any rings while throwing a pot, especially on your little finger.

Back when I had to pass proficiency on my bass, I practiced for something like five hours a day, and most of the pads on my left hand became completely smooth callouses. Which was funny because to get my driver's license updated I had to provide prints and they didn't match, even my thumb had a callous on the side from playing in thumb position so it blanked out the whole left side of my print.

They had to verify with the right hand, but from playing electric bass at the same time only two fingers looked the same.

Stupid society not adjusting for artist lifestyles.
