Nope. We just refuse to accept Tolkien as the end all be all of mythological lore. His stuff was great but inaccurate in that regard.
Edit - oh and you forgot the PC tag "not that there's anything wrong with that" on your post. So I can assume you belong to the Phelps school of thinking.
Edit Edit - not really. Just feel like getting you into trouble.
I was actually going to say "kissing a woman with a beard doesn't make you gay, stop being dwarfhomophobic." But I felt that was a little too faux-PC.
Also, from what I understand Tolkien got that from Nordic mythology (The Dvergar) but anyone here with a more specific knowledge of Nordic Myth can correct me on that.
My point is that I always think it's funny when people make assertions about fictional characters that exist on multiple universes. Keebler and Legolas are two different kind of elves, with little to no physical similarities, but to some people they're both "elves."
I remember being the only nerd in my fifth grade class who didn't think elves should be the ones that work in Santa's shop, but the ones who swing under horses and shoot people with arrows. Once LOTR came out in theaters it either got worse or better with everyone believing elves look like Orlando Bloom.
