Iain M. Banks
« on: June 20, 2009, 07:39:35 AM »
Do we like him? Do we not like him? Have we heard of him?

I picked up a book of this the other day, Consider Plebas, I am enjoying is so far. Although 'so far' is about 4 pages in.

I picked it up on the whim of wanting something to read and being in a sci-fi mood.  So having nothing else to go on,  I figured I'd see if it's worth grabbing more of his books.  Though I suppose I could figure that out myself after I am done reading the book...I really just wanted an excuse to talk to you. ;)

Iain Banks is awesomeness in printed form. Do not hesitate, go and buy everything else he's written. Go NOW!

You're still reading! Go!

I think all his stuff is great, he explores a lot of different ideas in his seperate books, I haven't caught him repeating himself yet. His latest was Matter but all of his books are really stand-alones and can be read in whatever order.

I read the wiki entry on him and The Culture.

I think I'll get it since it sounds interesting and mostly because Syl has good taste and therefore the books will be entertaining. If not, I know who to complain to.
Will I get Night Owl points for quitting but not as much for getting fired?
Will I still be a member of the Owl's Pals? I'd hate to turn in my card. It's got a real owl feather under the lamination and everything.

*waves at the lara like person*

I did pay attention, I just have a horrid memory.  Next time you suggest some books I shall tattoo the names on my body somewhere, as to never forget them. :D   But you know, tattoo them in washable ink, cause otherwise people would think I was strange.

I am halfway through this book and I am enjoying it a lot. His writing style is very enjoyable.  I only wish I'd payed attention to someone suggesting him earlier!

I'm a big fan of Iain Banks, but only his fiction novels, thats only because I'm not really in to reading Sci-fi though.  Some of his fiction novels do blur the boundaries though like Walking on Glass and The Bridge which are both brilliant but you really should check out his back catalog, I've not read a bad banks book.

No, I'm just pimping him for free.

His non-scifi is fairly dark. Lots of black humour but often also very dark.

I went to the bookstore to get the first book and they didn't have it. All they had was Matter.

So I got Book 5 in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter / Werewolf Lover series.

Ok. I'm on the first book. Chapter Five I think. I'm at the point where the lady from the Culture and the other person are discussing the war (and the pros and cons of their societies). ALong with the Changling's mission to retrieve the Mind from the sun.
