ANNOUNCEMENT: Testing out a new server

That time of year where we usually pass the hat is coming up, but this time we're trying out a new solution. I am currently in the process of creating a complete backup of the website, forum and archives. This copy will be copied (bet you didn't see that one coming, eh?) to a new server, which is located in Europe (the old one was in the US).

Giving the infrastructure of the Internet (wires running across the Atlantic Ocean), there should be little to no impact on the speeds of the servers for US residents, and the host should both be more stable, and virtually free, I will pick up any remaining charges (basically only domain renewal). Therefore there will be no passing of the hat until further notice. If the new server turns out to not meet our expectations, we will rethink the pla-- erhm.. there is no plan, forget everything I said.

So once the copy/move is complete, you will be redirected to the new server. Post away all you want, and if there are no problems, we will stick to the new server, and move the domain to that server. There forum will be closed here while we're testing.

UPDATE: Skins are fixed.
UPDATE: Attachments are fixed.

As the most alert of you have already noticed, we have temporarily moved to chucara.dk/forum. This is because we cannot simply move the domain name as easy as I can move the forums.

There will be a few errors on this site, but if the speed and stability is decent, we will update the board to the latest version and fix the mistakes.

So, please let me know if there are any problems.

NOTE: Especially the skins are troublesome, but nothing that can't be fixed.

No sure what you mean.. Anyway, I've updated the skins now, so theoretically, everything should work again.

Might be a cookie issue with it listing the old hostname or something.

Great news!  Finally I can load the board without it taking (literally) two minutes to load.  Ever since we moved to the last place, I'd had horrendously slow load times, which is part of the reason I never really posted all that much; I didn't like sitting and waiting for the page to load whenever it felt like it.  This loads much faster for me now, thanks Chucara!  Someone give that man some toast!

Brugdor:  I initially bookmarked http://www.chucara.dk/forum/ before I logged in, and every time I opened the page it would act as if I weren't logged in, but if I open a sub-forum I was logged in, so I re-bookmarked http://chucara.dk/forum/index.php after logging in and it works normally (also make sure to add the new URL to your Exceptions list in your cookies settings if you have Firefox set to not allow cookies from all sites)

Solwyn had it right, the cookie issue should be resolved now.

All issues like that will be resolved once we get to the permanent server, but the most important thing to notice is if the load times are acceptable for you - the rest will be worked out.

So far, Silver Dragon loads a lot faster, which is a good thing. Where are you located SD?

  I'm in Washington State, USA.  *nods*  I don't know where the last server was, but where-ever it was, it must have been maintained by blind fingerless monkeys.

I think he means this...  "An error has occurred!  The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."  Gave me that error message when I tried to upload a .jpg for an avatar.

Ahh.. That's fixed too now..

The last server was somewhere in the US, this one is in Denmark. So by all means of logic, this one shouldn't be faster for you. But I'll give you, that the previous site was slow on occasions, and not entirely well maintained (I have hundreds of "There has been a problem with the database!" emails to prove it)
