... courtesy of the installer auto-detecting my rig's abilities.
This might not look that exciting to other people, but I have never had a top-of-the-line gaming rig before. Glee!

My collectors edition SAID pre-order ships on the 7th... but I Got the shipping email today =(
I am disappointed thus far. lol
-
My collectors edition ships tomorrow, so I should be good to go by Thursday. I've also managed to get my hands on the power armour figure, which should arrive the same day.
360 version so I can play it on the HDTV - I canned the PC order for now, I'll maybe pick it up later on if the toolset appears down the line.
Crazy amount of games lately - my premier edition of Red Alert 3 ships tomorrow as well. But Fallout 3 first.
-
Amazon cancelled my pre-order for Ce. Managed to find a Danish site with a few left and pre-ordered, it was sent today, and it doesn't officially come out until friday <3
-
happy for ya, best screen shot I have seen so far. :)
-
i was almost scared for mine because my credit card was compromised... but it was approved before my card canceled so i am in the clear (funny because i was going to cancel it tomorrow and pick it up at the nearby EB, which supposedly had quite a few Collector's Editions).
also, my friend bought his today and will probably be telling me all about it tomorrow, haha.
-
I got the CE (for the 360), and will be playing shortly. Will skip the PC version unless, like Petrarch said, a toolset comes out.
-
Just wanted to let everyone know that I got the Collectors edition for the PC today. I will be enjoying this but first I'm taking a shower so I can get ready to enjoy this.
Then I have some work to do but then more Fallout.
So if anyone was really sad that I couldn't play because Amazon cancelled my Survivors edition and then delayed my order... don't worry!
I will be enjoying Fallout in 10 minutes so you can rest easy.
-
I went ahead and took the plunge as well. I was in a building shooting and stabbing people when I decided to take a break. :P

Yes I was desperately clinging to my Bible and gun at the time. ;)

Dude, they're definitely going to release a toolset. The only reason they didn't release one with the game is that Oblivion got fucking re-rated by the ESRB because of a user-created mod or whatever the hell happened. As soon as it's been on the shelves for a month or two and the rating is set in stone, there's no fucking way they won't release the mod tools. Frankly, with the insane shit that the ESRB is pulling lately, delaying the mod kit release only makes sense.
-
I fucking hate you Than. So fucking much.
I picked up my copy this morning and it autodetected it at low quality. Currently counting down the hours at work until I can get home and playyyy. General feedback I'm seeing on messageboards is positive so far.
Owl, all things being equal, why get the 360 version over the PC version?
-
Ahh...
*satisfied purr*
I just finished playing a bit... at ULTRA settings. One step above High. =)
I love the VATS!
The game is awesome! =)
Here's some photos
-
And some more...
First the best top in the universe. (Thanks Loveshack!)
And now some pictures of flowers in the best bowls in the universe. (Thanks Dwarfy!)

Owl, all things being equal, why get the 360 version over the PC version?
Recliner more comfortable than computer chair
42" LCD better than 21" LCD
Better controls (at least I think so)
If a toolset is released however, I will buy the PC version in a heartbeat.
-
will post a few thoughts after about an hour in:
1) I can see VATS is going to be awesome. Fun fun fun.
2) DEFINITELY "Oblivion-ish" in feel. This is good, IMHO.
3) Sneaking is fun.
4) Was not sure which skills to take - I took small guns, sneak (if it's anything like Oblivion, sneak will be handy), and... speech?
5) Since *everything* doesn't depend on AP's this time, there's no need (IMHO) to take a 10 in agility (no gifted perk in the beginning, either, so you don't get those extra 7 points)
6) I killed someone who seemed pretty important. Oops. Guessing that's ok, though (hey, the game let me, and even reacted to it.)

I think I did that too... nudge nudge know who I'm talking about?
I reloaded and still didn't get out of it. I thought another conversation tree would give me a out but it didn't.
However... I think there's a solution in the office further down where I hopefully don't have to kill... the Nameless Important Person.

Installing right now!
Amazon.com shipped my pre-order Survival Edition last night, had it here by this afternoon. (And Yes, Doomsie, they tried to cancel my order as well, but I got the initial email from them asking for a response on whether or not to cancel...though now I almost wish I'd gone for just the Collector's Edition).
Overall the Collector's Edition of the game is nice, the dvd and concept art booklet, and the bobblehead (the bobblehead is better made than the clock!) are all well done, and the lunch box is kickass!! (no thermos though! should've had a Nuka-Cola Thermos instead of the clock!)
As for the Pip-Boy 3000 "Deluxe Chronometer", it feels cheap, though it looks alright on the shelf and does nothing other than tell time (no alarm, no radio, nothing remarkable at all), unless you want to try to wear it for giggles. Though it does say 'not a toy' and 'not intended for wear' on the packaging, I'm still woefully unimpressed by Bethesda's effort on this part of the package, and it was certainly not worth the 50$ upcharge, but since I rarely buy games when they release, I figured I'd give this one a shot. Guess that'll teach me, eh? :inquisitive:
Funny thing though, the box for the clock has one of those 'inspected by' stickers like you find in socks and other garments...which reads..."Inspected By 13 for Vault Deployment"
Alright, I'm off to explore the wastelands once more!

Yeah... I might have Buyer's Remorse after that. I probably should just spend the money on that Nuko Cola on E-bay.
I wish there were more Fallout theme items to buy. I would LOVE to have small figurines that showed some of the common perks, skills, traits, etc.

I felt the $50 was way too much for just the clock thingee, so I went with collector's. LOVE the lunchbox / bobblehead / art book - nice package.
If I had to guess, I would guess that Bethesda (who are not cheap) was just as disappointed with the clock (which they undoubtably had made by a third party).
-
I was going to not get it, with Wrath right around the corner and someone really bugging me not to. But I woke up today and just couldn't not. Racing home and gleefully opening the package to find... that my four year old CD-ROM doesn't even know what a PC-DVD is.

6) I killed someone who seemed pretty important. Oops. Guessing that's ok, though (hey, the game let me, and even reacted to it.)
Well I also did this so I guess it's a pretty common er...mistake *innocent look*
I just got done doing some shopping for a person *vague*

Yeah... sorry about hitting him with a baseball bat and groin shooting him.
I thought MAYBE... maybe.... I could switch my weapon and blame it on someone else. That didn't work.
"OMG! Who shot this nameless person? Wasn't me. Someone shot him with a gun, I only have a baseball bat... which I used to kill the guy who shot the VIP. If *cough* ahem I was only there in time."
-
It was really, really hard not to kill that person. You have to walk a razor thin line.
So far the game has been fucking incredible. I will jaw about it at length tomorrow when I'm at work and have time to kill. I'd like to post a screenshot of me dominating someone, but combat SCs are always too hard to get; inevitably the capture always takes place right before or after the awesome moment.
So...
Look! It's our nation's capital! ULTRA DC!

I tried Lockpicking but I was caught even though I had Sneak/Steal as a tagged skill. Maybe I just 'rolled' bad? I had two satisfying moments in the game. One was with a guard with the vats. Groin with a bat and then a uppercut with a bat.
The other was the EPIC jump in the air and bring the bat down moment with a RadRoach. The roach splattered the hallway. =)
-
I'm trying not to kill that person. I was to play as a good person that takes no sass.
eg. You're not getting my pastry!
-
And it's dispatched! I'm stoked for this. Got Friday off work so I can spend the day messing around with it. Glad I got the story in Fable 2 finished so I don't have to keep jumping between the 2.
My personal mission is to find a combat shotgun, flick on VATS and introduce it to someone's face.
Btw, I realise this may be too early to tell, but the power armour the Brotherhood are using - has anyone seen/found out anything that would tell us if it's a redesign of the T51-B and is supposed to be the original or is it a newer/older version?
-
I opted for the 360 version over the PC version myself - a first for me when such a choice is available actually. My reasons?
Normally if I have a choice with FPS I always go for the PC version because there's no way a handheld controller can ever compete with the free'n'easy movement afforded by a mouse, simple as that. But...Fallout 3 has the handy dandy bullet time VATs doesn't it? And that more than compensates I'd say. 8)
The main reason though is the age of my rig here. It can still handle most things okay, but the key word there is "okay". I knew beyond a doubt that running Fallout 3 would mean having most of the sliders knacked to minimal. But I also know I don't have to worry about the 360's specs not being up to scratch because that's the wonder of consoles isn't it?
Oh, and there's also the small matter of a large HDTV in the living room, see, and the comfy chairs too ;D

I used to think this also, but I have found that, after getting used to it, I actually prefer the controller. And not that either version is "real", using the controller does mimic using a gun better (as compared to a keyboard) - to me, it definitely adds to immersion.
I usually always buy the x-box version of a game myself. I will buy the PC version of FO3 if mods surface, however.
-
Played for a couple hours last night. Love it. I'm running around the vault trying to activate those red glowy computer terminals the same as in Fallout 1 and 2. VATS is excellent. Third-person perspective seems a little wonky indoors, and graphics on my PC aren't exactly eyepopping but its fluid and purty. Some of the dialouge is appropriately lol-worthy.
-
Maybe we should start a *spoilers* thread just to tell funny and/or cool things we've found?

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe you do it!

I found a frag grenade!

Gah. So tempting... but then again I'm afraid my computer wont run it as smoothly as I want.
So, I'm willing to wait a couple of months before I get this game. Good things take time, ya know. >.>
Also, its not out yet. We're getting it on friday :T
I may change my mind before then... but we'll see how money pans out this week.
-
I did have Buyer's Remorse and attempted to cancel my Amazon order for the Survivor Edition.
They said it was already in the box and ready for shipping. I suppose I could just return it after.
I was semi ok with the price for the PipBoy but I'm hearing it feels like a cheap plastic piece of junk. At that quality, I'll just buy some Fallout items to make my computer corner all Fallout-y instead.

Yeah, but ever play Max Payne on the PS2?
That was the worst aiming setup ever. Great game, great writing, lousy interface.

Judging from the PC version having a "Data Files" option in the start up menu where you can select .esm files like Oblivion did, I'd guess a toolset isn't too far off down the line :D

I was going to use it on the ants since they looked so creepy. Wet looky ants are gross!
What next? Radapedes? :-X

Haven't seen an ant yet but those little bees are annoying. :P

i think i have a permanent smile grafted onto my face, for i just received the most beautiful email ever:
Greetings from Amazon.ca!
We thought you'd like to know we shipped your items, and that this
completes your order.
*snip*
1 Fallout 3 Collector's Edition CDN$ 74.99
;D
as a side note, i ordered the 360 version for a few reasons:
- no installing
- achievements! granted, the PC version might have those too since that has been the trend recently.
- if i am rendering something in 3DS Max that takes a long time, i can jump onto the X-Box and not have to worry about being bored out of my mind.
-
Minigun to the groin!
-
I'm at work and not going straight home today, but the collectors version arrived, as did the power armour figure. I'll get a pic of it later. Can't join in on the screenshots though unless I start taking pictures of the TV. Which I might do once or twice just for the hell of it.
And C&C: Red Alert 3 arrived too.
-
Unpacked it and as promised, here's a pic of the power armour figure. It's die cast rather than articulated. One next to the bobblehead and lunchbox for scale and one by itself.
-
My first screens :)

How do you spin the camera around to look at your front side? (PC version)

Hold down the F key and use your mouse to change the camera angle/zoom in & out.

I am sooo angry at the universe right now!

poor puppy.

Those are some nasty looking dogs.
Not nasty in that... "let's make a monster out of this animal by giving it bat wings and fangs" sorta way.
Nasty in that... here's something that looks like it's been sleeping in it's own filth.

Did someone say something about wanting a Sawed-off Shotgun (http://pics.livejournal.com/brugdor/pic/0005k2ax)?
Found it off a random mob that a turret took out.
Also, made meself a Railway Gun (http://pics.livejournal.com/brugdor/pic/0005p8bt).
-
How the hell do I put my gun away?
I keep having to switch to my baseball bat and then hitting ready :T
-
Pictures of me!
-
I looked up 'overkill' in the dictionary, it had your minigun picture beside it.
-
I'm not really liking the minigun, I'm doing far more damage with the combat shotgun and assault rifle. I think perhaps my endurance is too low and that's having a knock on effect. Next time I'll beef it up a bit.
-
Pictures of me!
that must be one tough Radroach if you're shooting it with a minigun
i'm going to have to get some shots of me popping people's heads with garden gnomes shot from my Rock-It Launcher... in all my blue haired hockey mask wearing goodness.
-

Good! Now I can put my weapon away.
Walking around with my fists or my laser rifle taking up 1/5 of the screen is a tad annoying.
Not REAL annoying... just a tad's worth.
-
Plus you run slower if you've got your weapon/fists up, dummy! Weren't you paying attention during the tutorials?

I was thinking about that dreamy and oh so dangerous leader of the Trouser Snakes.
But then I lost all my attraction when he needed my help to kill a roach. >:(
-
What, you don't like to make men grovel?
Moar screens.
Landmine research and a smoking hot radiation suit with, um, flaming sword?

Ooh, damn... I didn't realize just how much I've missed Fallout... Release couldn't have happened at a worst time though, since I've got an exam in week's time, and even now I'm supposed to be extra busy with Photoshop & Indesign stuff.
I'm pretty pleased that they didn't feel the need to go the same road that Star Wars: The Next Generation went, and cram every character from earlier episodes into the new one, no matter how implausible their appearance would be. ;D
One question for PC users: did anyone else have trouble with those damn screenshots? I mean, the game says it has taken one, and gives even a name for the shot, but I can't find them anywhere... I checked the .ini files and the permission for screenshots is checked, but I haven't figured out what the hell iScreenShotIndex=1 is supposed to do. It could also be that this has something to do with Vista security settings... Damn! Missed a couple of great Kodak moments already.

They are in /program files/bethesda softworks/fallout 3
-
You know, I had the same question, and I'm pretty sure I looked there and didn't see my screenshots. I'll have to check again once I get home - I've got some fucking great shots.
Also, it's total bullshit that you can't kill kids.
-
There's something fucking wrong with my FO3 installation, because my screenshots definitely aren't there, which sucks, because I have taken some AWESOME screenshots. I've looked freaking everywhere in my systerm (shit, I windows search'ed for .bmp files). Nothing.
Shenanigans!

Ok probably a silly question but just to be sure, are you actually seeing the message that you've taken a screenshot in the upper left of your screen when you hit the key?
-
Yup, it says 'ScreenshotXX.bmp captured' or whatever. The XX is going up too; I'm up to Screenshot18.bmp or whatever, so the damn game is keeping track of how many I've taken or knows where the old ones are or something. It's just hiding them somewhere.
-
Sorry Than, dunno what to tell ya then. :(
I have a couple more
My gnome collection (http://pics.livejournal.com/brugdor/pic/0005scbz/g28) grew.
And...karma (http://pics.livejournal.com/brugdor/pic/0005t6wf/g28)? That's just so very wrong
-
hahahahah, I murdered Cutter in cold blood while he was asleep. I got karma for it too.
Also, I probably shouldn't be encouraging your addiction, but I know a place where you can score some primo product. In the way northwest of the map there are three satellite dish towers full of raiders, and near the top of one of them, there's a chessboard set up. All the back row pieces are random shit like whiskey bottles and batteries, but the pawns are all miniature gnomes. You'd better not be carrying too much loot though, because for some reason miniature gnomes weigh five pounds just like the bigger ones, and there's, what, 16 pawns on a chessboard? 80 pounds of gnomes?

It definitely turned out to be some stupid Vista security stuff. The only way I've managed to get screenshots is by playing the game as an admin user. I tried tinkering the security setup to no avail, but at least it works the admin way. Never managed to find any of the earlier shots.
For a second there, I got a severe case of altitis, but finally managed to settle with this kid. Oh dear. He used to be such a polite young man. Then he started to hang around with those unsavory characters daddy always warned about...
