R.I.P. UVer David "Kama" Hartstein
« on: June 12, 2013, 04:03:49 PM »
On June 10th David Hartstein passed away in hospital in Boston.

We knew him here as "Kama, the Eternally Hopeful", an Eldar elf of aristocratic background. If memory serves, he joined the UV way back in 1999, and his UV elven persona featured in many of the stories and yarns our community posted over the years, always as a witty, erudite and gentlemanly character with nearly the same obsession about tea as my own alter ego Turjan.

And so he was IRL too - always polite, ever the gentleman, and with an ever ready dry and clever wit. And yes, like me he did indeed have a real life obsession with tea. But there was something that not too many in our Village knew : David suffered from a rare blood condition, one where left unchecked, his bone marrow would eventually literally try to turn his blood cells into bone.

In the years I knew him, David tried several experimental drugs, but ultimately he was left with only one choice - a bone marrow transplant. Without that, his chances of survival were zero. Even with it, his chances were still far from 100%. If a donor could be found, he'd face radiation and chemotherapy to kill off his own marrow, then undergo the transplant procedure, remain on anti-rejection drugs... a daunting prospect.

But David was nothing if not a fighter, so in April this year when he learned a donor had been found, he went into hospital to begin the procedure. And all was going well - after the transplant his blood profile was near normal for the first time in decades. However, the procedure had also left his immune system in a weakened state, and sadly he contracted pneumonia. He fought on, and the medical staff fought alongside him, but in the end the fight was lost.
David left us on Monday night.

As many UVers will remember, David was an enthusiastic fan of Tolkien's writings, especially those about elves. In 2003 he came to stay with me in England, and together we walked the very paths where Tolkien himself had wandered years before, taking inspiration from the English countryside. I still remember David's smile as he strode happily through the fields - it was as if for a moment his illness had vanished, swept away by his sheer love for nature and elves and Tolkien's vision.

The other thing David loved was Doctor Who. As a child he and a friend used to challenge each other to Doctor Who trivia quizzes on their daily journey to and from school. That passion for all things Whovian never left him, so when the series was resurrected, he was a happy man indeed. Moreso when David Tennant took up the mantle of The Doctor, for some said our David himself bore more than a slight resemblance to the new Tennant Doctor!

David liked to attend Dragon Con, and in 2007 he siezed the chance to go dressed as the tenth Doctor. And he became quite the centre of attention! Many folk did a double take and stopped to ask for photos to be taken alongside him. David made many new friends there, and there's no doubt that helped keep him going in the ongoing battle with his condition.

I raise a cup of PG Tips tea to him now, and imagine him whizzing off through time and space in his own TARDIS, and landing on a world filled with mallorn trees, sweet music, and of course, dancing elven beauties.

David "Kama" Hartstein was a man of many dreams, and while a physical body may fail, it's not so easy to kill a dream. Rest in peace old chum, you will not be forgotten.

Sad...

His posts always did seem to bring a sense of calmness and reason to the board (sometimes which we desperately needed).

I will miss him, though I hardly knew him.

It's been so long since I spoke with him, I can barely remember our last conversation.

It's sad that I'll never get to catch up with him. I'd always secretly wished that all the old UVers would come back to the board and go nuts like we used to, even if for only a month or two.

I'll raise a glass to him, perhaps continue on where he left off, but ultimately I thank him for being part of my childhood.

Thank you for letting us know Turjan, Kama is one of the many I've missed through the years and now he's joined those that leave a hole in our collective heart filled with fond memories.

It's so sad that he left us when he was so close to getting better but it's such a testament to the man that he died pursuing a dream and an inspiration to know how much bravery he approached it with.

I didn't personally know Kama but I remember reading a lot of his posts when I first joined...

His contributions and strong spirit will surely be missed by all and I'm saddened that I never got the opportunity to meet him.

Is hard to imagine the village without Kama, or without any of the members we have lost.
I would never drink "tea" with Kama but in memory of David Hartstein I will lift a large cup in his memory.

Today is a sad day in the Unwashed Village. I almost didn't believe it when I read the topic of this thread; Just the other day I was wondering when we'd here from him next.

Although I didn't know him personally, he left his mark upon the village and myself. Since first joining years ago, I can remember how his uplifting and imaginative posts seemed to spark life into the forum every time he dropped in.

RIP Kama

Killmod stared at the rickety sign, labeled "Graveyard", hanging above the patch of parched earth. After a deep exhale, he looked down, only to feel a shock to familiarity. For whence before there were one, now twin headstones stood next to each other, as if bonded even after death by what had brought them to the Village. He stared solemnly at the headstone labeled "Kama". "Some things DO change," he muttered as if to no one, "but the only things that never change are memories and War."
In the wasteland, the sly survive and the past and present are one, the sinners rot and the future is the ultimate purgatory

Wherever he's gone, there's a whole lot less pain.
I'm glad he got to do so much with the time he had.

Looking back, his check-ins over the past several years always carried an infectious optimism and remarkable perspective on mortality and the opportunities of life.

I regret never thanking him for sharing that struggle and joy with us.

RIP Kama.

RIP Kama. You shall be missed.

Speaking of the good Doctor, Liz and I have participated in two Doctor Who LARPs that Kettle of Fish productions have run at Origins Gaming Convention for the last two years. (Liz and I were there this past weekend.) We had a guy who looked eerily like Tennant last year play that incarnation. (We had two other incarnations last year, but I forget which numbers.) Sadly he wasn't in the one this year. Liz brought back her Time Agent character, and my character a 1920's era Scotland Yard detective came back after being recruited into the Time Agents at the end of the previous year.

We also had a female playing Jack Dorsey both years. She has a haircut oddly similar to his, and nailed his personality. The doctors this past year were number 10 and number 11, IIRC.

I think Kama would have really enjoyed something like that.
All right, I’ve been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man whose gonna burn your house down – with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

I never knew him particularly well, but his passing is still a loss to the community that knew him for so long.

I'm very sad to have heard about this.

My condolences to his friends and family.

So sad to visit the village again and then to read this. :( I remember Kama as one of the nicest people I've never met.
