I didn't realise there was an (obvious) way to switch that crap off sort of digging in the registry. It only happens to me rarely now, and I think that's because M$ are working on Vista not XP so much.

Thanatos, I disagree. There is a huge amount of truth in what you've said, but I think the electric interwebs would have arrived even without Micro$ofts intervention. The French (and other Europeans?) had minitel before the net really took off, and I'm sure it would have evolved into an incarnation of what we're using now.

And I'll disagree a bit with that. While Minitel was innovative and all, it was pretty much a purpose-driven network--like most of it's equivalents on Arpanet--and not designed to be accessible to just any computer. In fact, Minitel only works with proprietary terminals. It really took JANET (UK--1984) and NSFNET (U.S. National Science Foundation--1985) to bring the idea of a network open to all qualified users to the forefront.
All right, I’ve been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man whose gonna burn your house down – with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

OK, answering a couple of things here...

'rename file before sending'
Shouldn't have to do this plus it puts the burden on someone else who doesn't even have the problem.

'the fix' (registry hack); I did this and it worked

TrendMicro AV 2007 and Spybot
the 'original' problem.  If you run Spybot, you may end up with incredible 'slowness' after updating to latest 2007 TrendMicro.  Turns out that there is a conflict between TrendMicro and Spybot's 'Immunize' function.  So either undo the Spybot 'immunize' function, or reload TrendMicro 2006 (you can use your 2007 Serial Number/key for this).

and now, the latest 'issue'
