What games have you been playing latly?
« on: January 02, 2015, 11:46:23 PM »
I recently beat Deus Ex (the original) for PC and, holy shit it was amazing. I almost never finish a game, so for me to put 30+ hours into something is an achievement. After finishing this game, I feel like my mind has been opened to nirvana game design. Sure, the voice acting is atrocious (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kihGm4KfY7k) and the combat is wonky, but the things it did right were so perfect.

Bought Destiny. Its really disappointingly medicore, if you haven't played it yet.

Also been playing a lot of Super Smash 4 for 3DS. I doubt anyone has this, but if you do feel free to add me, I usually main Dr. Mario or Game & Watch

2014 was one of the worst years for new games, but I know some of you still play games, so what have you been playing??

Bridge.

Ticket to Ride.

World of Warcraft.

Chess.

Sleep.

OK, that last one is technically not a game (all right, it's not even NON-technically not a game) but I like it.

And pvz2 daily things

I'm sure that's not what you really wanted. I've been trying to knit more lately and I need to get my ass writing again. I have a novel and a pilot episode to finish writing

The last three games I've been playing extensively are:

- Wolfenstein: The New Order
- Styx: Master of Shadows
- Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor

I didn't expect much of any of those games, but they all turned out to be to my liking.

I got a PS4 for christmas, ended up getting Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Driveclub, GTA V and The Last of Us (Remastered, because the PS3 version is a year old, so it obviously needs to be updated).

I finished all of those games in a week. XD

I eventually forked out some money for Diablo III and I don't see what the fuss is about. Everyone said that it was inferior to Diablo II, so I knew that going in but considering that everyone who hadn't played D II was banging on abut it, I would have thought that it was like a Fallout 3 scenario of the game being a good game but not a good Diablo game.

Turns out that the game's... rather meh... It doesn't even feel like a PS3 gen game, more like a PS2 game, like Champions of Norath or something. It's not a bad game and it's kind of fun online (if you aren't partnered up with a God, who strides among the mere mortals, crushing anyone foolish enough to get in his way, under his boot. Whilst you're a level 2 witch doctor, who shimmies around, half naked, like a sex offender who was caught a few minutes after shitting himself) and it's not particularly a bad game, the spells and abilities are rather fun, especially if you're a witch doctor, like mwah.

I also got Neverwinter Nights 3 for PC, which I'm quite looking forward to. :P

Mobile games count. I loved The Simpsons, but Simpsons Tapped out seemed weird.

Bummer aboout Diablo 3. I still haven't played it. I think I like Diablo 1 the best.

I had Diablo 3 pre-ordered on PC, but ended up receiving the game in mail a couple of days after the launch. I had learned about the always online requirement and other problems with the game in the meantime and returned the game without opening the package. To further underline my decision, I gave the refunded money to a colleague for him to pledge on Grim Dawn on Kickstarter. I had already pledged $78 on it myself.

Grim Dawn is a pretty good alternative to Diablo. The game is not complete yet, but there's already plenty to enjoy. The first chapter of Act 3 was made available last month. I've been playing the game since alpha and I've clocked 94 hours on it so far.

I've pretty much been playing Wasteland 2. Not sure what I'll play when I finish. (Which with the amount I play games these days might still be a while.)

Probably Far Cry 4.
All right, I’ve been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man whose gonna burn your house down – with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

I recently got Soul Calibur II: HD, Online, Reaper of Souls, Mickey Mouse edition from the PSN store for £3.99 in the sale and sadly it's the best Soul Calibur game on the PS3/360 gen consoles. I swear, I'm starting to feel like a Sonic fan, waiting three years at a time for games that are vastly inferior to the games made ten years before it, made with inferior technology and presumably on an inferior budget.

Anyway, it's Soul Calibur II again but with a graphics polish and online mode added but the changes aren't completely aesthetic as you can now play as both Spawn and Heihachi on both the Xbox 360 and the PS3, whereas before they were console exclusives. Link, from Zelda, who was only in the Nintendo Gamecube version, doesn't feature in the HD edition but from what I've heard, he was the worst SC character ever.

I don't usually get shinier versions of PS2 games, especially when I already own them to begin with and Soul Calibur II looked so nice on the PS2 that it could have passed as a PS3/360 gen game anyway but it was in the sale and I felt like some nostalgic gameplay, so what the hell. That and I didn't feel like getting up to get the SC II disc off of the shelf and then changing the channel to AV1 and booting up my PS2, plus I've always wanted to play as Spawn.

Annieway as far as graphics go, they've 'improved' it by adding a shiny layer to the character textures, like they've put a layer of cling film over everything and it reflects the florescent lights as they bounce off of them. Though, come to think of it, that might just blind the opponent long enough for me to get the odd hit in, so okay, leave it in. To be honest, the backgrounds do look a lot nicer and more detailed though the human characters kind of suffer for the pixels being stretched, due to the fact that every character has a completely texture-less skin so it looks incredibly weird now.

Apart from that it's SC:II, pretty much unchanged, from the looks of it they haven't fixed anything, which is fine by me, because the millions of problems that PS2 games used to have just added to their charm and I don't remember SC:II having too many problems, looking back. I've found it fun playing through the game again as I've always wanted to play through the weapon master mode again and now this game has given me the excuse to do it.

If you missed SC:II, IE the best fighting game of all time (with the possible exception of Tekken 5), then now might be a good time to check this gem out. If you owned or still own SC:II, then at sale price, it makes Soul Calibur II rather fresh again and miraculously has more content than Soul Calibur V, though, come to think of it, I'm sure that there are Atari games that have more content that SC:V.

I guess I could talk about Vice City too.

I've been a fan of the GTA series since #2 on the Dreamcast. GTA V, which came out last October is a pretty amazing game. In fact, its probably one of the greatest games ever made, technologically speaking. But its a terrible game in the the GTA series. I'm still trying to slog through the single player missions. While the game does a lot of things great, It always felt hard to swallow, and until I replayed GTA: Vice City this week I never realized why.

Vice City came out more than 12 years ago on the Ps2. I played a ton of it over the years, but this week I got the PC version, and I have to say its some of the most fun I've had in months, maybe even years. Yes, I remember where everything is, and have almost every line memorized (the writing is about as perfect as it gets for a game), but after playing GTA:V I appreciate Vice City so much more.
GTA:V is a very dramatic game; There are 3 main protagonists, each with their own motivations and goals, and they often conflict with each other. The storyline deals with sensitive issues like divorce, backstabbing friends, government corruption etc. They put so much effort into the story that I often felt like I was playing an epic film instead of a game. Most missions are very involved and most have you doing steps for setting up later missions. Everything feels like a chore. Theres even one part where you literally have pretend to be a janitor and mop floors for 10 minutes, its fucking ridiculous. I want to shoot whoever thought that was a good idea. This game suffers from many of the same problems of GTA IV: too much focus on being realistic (but thankfully less so than GTA IV) over actually being fun. See, realism is games is rarely fun, or at least very hard to do both.

Anyway, Playing Vice City this week is so satisfying because everything is so instantly rewarding, I can't put it down. Theres one protagonist, and unlike the dramatic crybabies in GTA V, he rarely says much and its always very to the point. From the beginning its very clear his only motivation is money and power. While you could argue this makes him seem one dimensional, it keeps the players motivation to keep playing the most important thing. You're not playing to fix the characters problems, you're playing to finish more fun missions, or see what happens next in the story.
This is something that I've noticed about almost all new games; It takes way too long to get any sense of satisfaction. I love Skryim and GTA V even, but I hate how it takes at least an hour to do almost anything, even just completing one or 2 missions. As an adult, I don't have the patience to sit for hours only to complete a few quests out of 100 total. I guess thats why I was never into  MMOS.
Vice City is really immediate. Missions all take less than 10 minutes, but are exciting and satisfying, and every mission is only a couple of minutes from another. You get money and "mission completed!" as soon as you kill the guy you need to kill. GTA V has a really stupid map design, with a large sparse space in the middle, often requiring you to drive 5 or 10 minutes back and forth between missions. In almost every mission, after you kill the guy, you have to return to someone else, or drop somebody off, or call someone, before you get a reward. Everything feels really long and drawn out it and it kills the momentum. By contrast, Vice City is a game with no bullshitting around with character development, immediate rewards, and fast exciting gameplay. I feel like console games are on a slow decline because they treat everything like an epic film instead of a videogame.
Theres a reason why the greatest film is Citizen Kane, and the greatest game is Tetris, but they are very different from each other.

I kind of enjoyed GTA V but only, because it was the best of the games that I got with my PS4. If I had got it on PS3, two years ago, I probably wouldn't have finished it and, like GTA IV, it would have taken me five years or so to do.

I know what you mean about Vice City being more fun, I remember Canis Canem Edit being amazingly fun and having a story and characters that offered a lot on their own, without hours of conflicting cutscenes. To be honest, I blame this need to make everything into a redemption story, where protagonists spend the entire game talking about how they're tired about the killing and the needless violence as they drive on the pavement in a blood splattered car.

Just wanted to chime in and say that recently played Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and was disappointed. I feel like a lot of what made the original so fantastic has been lost, but that tends to happen when a series is revived after almost 10 years. I was excited when they announced the new Deus Ex game, but I can't help but feel the new generation of kids is going to think that Deus Ex is about slithering around every wall like a snake, performing cinematic kill moves, and generally being an unstoppable cyborg badass that everyone fears, when thats not at all what the series is about, but thats how the main character is portrayed.

Also I have been playing Chrono Trigger for DS, considered to be one of the best RPGs of all time.

I'll add in aswell.

I have been playing a lot of Old games by today's standards.

I recently uncovered my old PS2 and decided to go and buy a few games from Half Price Books, so I ended up getting another copy of Kingdom Hearts, Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Resident Evil 4. I came to remember how much I love video games and the stories they can bring or the entertainment they can present to me, especially Kingdom Hearts which I haven't played for almost 8 years.

As for PC gaming, I've been playing and purchasing old games too, like System Shock 2, Grim Fandango, Planescape: Torment etc.

It's been a good time though.

Probably the newest games I have any real interest in has to be Fallout 4 and Dishonored 2. I guess I'm just out of the loop for new games.
But it'll help
