Last week wasn't very good.
« on: December 17, 2013, 07:03:42 AM »
On Monday afternoon, one of my nephews (i.e. younger sister’s 12-year old son) collapsed at home after leaving school due to vomiting. After being revived by the EMT’s, he was taken to the Emergency room and placed in ICU where initial tests were run. They determined he had a 5 cm X 5 cm tumor on his brain stem and  planned to airlift him to Children’s Memorial Hospital in Milwaukee (nephew was comatose at this point). Liz and I found this out Monday evening and made preparations to drive to Milwaukee Tuesday evening. As we were getting ready on Tuesday, my sister called with an update. The initial decision from Children’s Memorial was that it wasn’t worth operating on. The chances of him surviving the surgery were negligible. Even if he did make it out of surgery, he would be spending the rest of his life hooked up to machines. So the family were all gathering in Milwaukee to essentially say goodbye. (My older sister was driving up from Michigan Wednesday morning.)

On Wednesday, my sister, my nephew’s father, and my sister’s husband all met with a different surgeon at the hospital who had decided after looking closely at my nephew’s vitals that the original diagnosis was far too pessimistic and he would be willing to operate. As long as my nephew’s vitals remained steady they would schedule the surgery for the following morning (i.e. yesterday).

Better news than the previous day, but trying to remove a tumor on the brain stem is about as easy as putting out a campfire with a squirt gun. The statistics are that only 1 in 5 survive the operation. Fortunately, the Neurological Surgery department at Children’s in Milwaukee is run by one of the top pediatric neurosurgeons in the nation, and his team of surgeons is pretty much as skilled as he is, including the doctor that would operate on my nephew (i.e. the aforementioned one who decided to take a chance on the surgery in the first place). So my nephew stood as good of a chance as any at beating the odds.

My nephew went into surgery at 7:30 Thursday morning. By 4:00 in the afternoon the surgery was finished. They were able to successfully remove about 80% of the tumor, which is about as much as can be removed safely. They don’t know if the tumor is benign or malignant at this point (though, really, how benign is a tumor on ones brainstem when you think about it?) My nephew’s vital signs were steady. He had beaten the odds for now.

He is currently still unconscious as they are slowly reducing his sedation. He has opened his eyes a few times and is apparently responding to his name. Granted, even if he wakes fully, he still has a long road ahead of him. The odds of survival through the first year for this type of situation are about 1 in 3. After the first year, however, the odds rapidly increase. But he’s a strong kid and he’s being treated by a great hospital, so his chances are no doubt higher.
All right, I’ve been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man whose gonna burn your house down – with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

Sorry to hear. I hope he gets better.

I just saw my nieces yesterday after a long while and thinking anything happening to them would be a disaster for me. Only hearing that the older of them got bullied at school got my blood boiling even if the case was already properly dealt with.

As for kids and recovery, they're apparently good at that. I was in ICU unconscious for a week myself after being hit by a car when I was 13. My parents were told that I wouldn't likely wake up anymore...

Wow, I hope he makes it through, Hoopy. So there wasn't any indication of a problem prior to his collapse on monday?

Also, I hope your sister has good health insurance.

No indication before the collapse.

As far as health insurance, I don't really know. I do know that money's going to be tight for her and my brother-in-law since they have to take off work for a lot of this. (They aren't exactly loaded to begin with.)

Really sorry to hear that; I do hope that he can beat the odds.

How awful, my thoughts are with your sister. Glad to hear he looks to be on the mend.  It's a hard road for everyone but having a supportive family will make all the difference.

I saw this thread a few days ago but I really struggled to think of a response, because something similar happened to my friend last week.

I know (or at least I have some idea) of what this must be like for you and I hope for the best, for you, your sister and your nephew.
If you find coping difficult, try not to be on your own, remember that you have people around you who can help keep your mind off of the pain.

I do hope he pulls through.

How's your nephew, man?  Inquiring minds want to know.
I fall and I leap and
I'm freaking out
Nowhere near my place and I
Know that they've seen me now

Update not good.

While he came out of surgery fine, the further tests they ran determined that his frontal cortex brain activity was at the level of roughly a 4-month old. They think he was probably brain-dead before he even got rushed to the emergency room. They don't know how long he had stopped breathing for when he first collapsed.

They officially disconnected him Monday afternoon. The memorial service will be Saturday.

If there's a silver lining to all this, it's that my sister will be donating his organs, and has even agreed to donate his brain to research so that they might be able to figure out why these tumors seem to appear out of nowhere with no warning.

Sorry to hear that, but thanks for the update.

Makes for a crummy holiday; hope that much better days are ahead for you and your family.

I'm sorry for the loss of both you and your sister, it must be hard around this time of year.

This may not involve your newphew, but I felt it was semi-related and wanted to share it in this thread.

Last Saturday, my dad was at home alone and had a heart attack. Luckily, he called 911 before the full effect was happening, and they rushed him to the hospital. On the way, his heart stopped twice and they had to use a defibrillator, which thankfully worked. He had to undergo surgery to put a stint in (Did you guys know they can do this without opening the chest at all?). He spent three days in the hospital, his vitals returned to normal, and he came home yesterday.

However, there was some permanent heart damage, which will be observed more in the coming months. He also has to wear a portable defibrillator and cannot drive for 3 months, which considering we have 4 people who work and a single car to share makes getting around extremely difficult. The stress level in my home is very high, and my dad argues more than any sane person should, which makes me wonder when the next attack might happen and if it will be his last. It makes me upset to think about.

Anyway my point is that, you are not alone Hoopy. Others have family health troubles too especially around the holiday season. We are there for you, even if its only to offer a little insight. Again, im sorry for your loss. Life is a fragile thing, and this past week has opened my eyes to the fact.
