We're waiting for a good reason (i.e. we decide to buy a home or have kids). Legal benefits aside, it's rather overrated, IMO.

I've only been married just the once, so maybe that's colored my opinion of it, but my only regret is not getting married sooner. We'd been together about 4 1/3rd years before that.

Honestly, it just made everything easier since we had just gotten out of college and paying shared bills was becoming a pain with two bank accounts. Double direct deposit from two jobs that paid once per month made us feel really rich the first of every month.

And really poor about five days after.

Nah, that's true. But we weren't getting married just for that.
And I have to admit, the first year I did our taxes together, through some fluke of working for the state and doing contract work on the side I had MASSIVELY underpaid, so I was going to owe the government like $5k. With all my wife's student debt credits and so forth we ended up owing them about a hundred bucks.

 I think it's good in a "finality" sense (although we all know it's not "really" final). I definitely see "married" as different than "we're together in every sense but the piece of paper". Is it better? I dunno - for me it is. Usually people against marriage say it's no big deal. Well, from where I sit, there's nothing but upside (legal benefits). I mean, assuming you're both thinking you are definitely going to be together for the long haul, is there any downside? At all? I don't see one.

Well, when she was in law school, her ability to qualify for loans would have been dependent on my income being figured in. So there really was a downside. With her out of law school, that doesn't really apply anymore, but there are other fiscal reasons (e.g. her law school debt) why it doesn't pay.

However, once she finds out if she passed the bar and gets a job, it may make sense at that point.

Society's convention of adherence to traditional institutions really doesn't enter into the picture at all.

hurmble bumble, I think that there is some validity to the whole "WE DON'T CARE ABOUT SOME STUPID LABEL'  thing, but at the end of the day, I'm not sure how much credence I can put in it.  People aren't robots.  I mean, wait, I forgot what I was talking about, has ymir been around lately?
