my sister is getting married in oregon three days before my dad's birthday. anyone know of anything (ie: BC) there for a fifty-something year old to do on a birthday or anything in general to do that's semi-off the beaten path for a family vacation?
In case of rapture, can I have your car?

If it wasn't Winter, I would recommend going east from Portland up the Gorge (The Dalles, Hood River, etc); great scenery.  And sometimes you can find an accidentally nice day in January or February.

Another option is the coast (about a 90 minute drive), again depends heavily on the weather (unless you like Winter storms).  Cannon Beach and south are where to be.  But Astoria is nice; great maritime museum, lots of Victorian bed and breakfasts, and quick jaunt across the river to Washington  (Long Beach, Seaview, Oysterville).

If you like snow and mountains and icy roads, then go east (and slightly south) up highway 26 to Mount Hood and Govt Camp.  Very, very, nice.

Going directly north or south from Portland doesn't offer much in terms of tourism or scenery.

I suppose this post is probably too late.

it's actually pretty early, i forgot to mention that she's getting married just before memorial day.

my dad mentioned the dalles, i think he only wants to stay two days before/after the wedding and my mom wants to spend a day with my sister if she can. i'd like to go to voodoo donuts if at all possible, have you heard anything about the place other than what travel channel spouts about it?

Hood River is actually nicer (and a bit closer) than The Dalles.

Hood River can be incredibly beautiful in the winter as well as incredibly dangerous.  The Interstate often gets closed due to ice, snow and/or accidents during winter.  The Gorge has this phenomenon where the East Wind barrels down the Gorge at sub freezing temperatures and makes a mess of everything.  In the summer, the wind makes the place a mecca for wind-surfers but if you visit in the winter, check the weather forecasts.

Lots of hiking and biking trails (weather permitting), and lots of spectacular waterfalls in the gorge; well worth seeing.

Most of the 'good stuff' is on the Oregon side so need to cross over to Washington with the one exception of the MaryHill Museum.  But that is quite a bit further up and again, only visit it weather permitting.

The history of it is quite fascinating: "Where the Sam Hill am I?"  <----------  really!
