Can I fix my USB Drive?
« on: April 19, 2010, 10:00:31 AM »
I have a 16gb Sandisk Cruzer Micro that I think is shot dead.
I left it in the computer when I reformatted my C: Drive and reinstalled Windows XP. I may have deleted its partition by mistake, but I don't know for sure.

Now, when I plug it in, Windows detects it, and tells me the proper capacity for it, but it also says it's unformatted. When I try to format it, (in FAT32), it ALMOST completes formatting before I get an error message telling me it didn't complete successfuly. Does anyone know how or if this is fixable?

I would try to reformat it on two different PCs and/or OS.

If those fail, then you have a very small and inefficient paperweight.

I expect, nay, DEMAND better quality in my shoddy Hong Kong bootleg flash drives!

Yes, it's a good program, and thank you for posting it. But I only paid $25 for the flash drive and the program costs $70, so it's really not practical for me to buy it.

I deal with a lot of people who place a great value on thier data but if you just want the drive to work try this file, the windows format tool is often a waste of time and refuses to format drives if you've somehow managed to damage the file allocation table.

Won't it be worth it so you don't have to find all those X-men Swimsuit photos from around the net again?  ;D
Will I get Night Owl points for quitting but not as much for getting fired?
Will I still be a member of the Owl's Pals? I'd hate to turn in my card. It's got a real owl feather under the lamination and everything.

I have no idea WHAT you're talking about, Doomsie! I'm not some sort of creepy perv!

Thanks TK. The HP Format Tool was one of the first things I tried, and no dice. Well, thank GOODNESS I had no data on it. I NEVER use a thumb drive as anything more than temporary data storage and NEVER as the only copy of any particular data. I think the thing MIGHT be fried. (It's the bootleg one I got duped with on Ebay a while back.) I tried formatting it in CMD and once again it ALMOST finishes formatting in there and then gives me this:

I think you can download a trial version for free, but maybe not.  That's what I get for thinking.

We've warned you about that before, BC! Yeah the trial version just tells me what it CAN do if I pay them a bunch of money.

Are you sure?  I kinda thought it was the 'golf clap.'  But maybe that would be 'clap... clap... ...  ... clap...'

Nah it's the sarcastic LOOKING clap that actually applauds the effort you put into that post.

So... Clap... Clap... Clap...

If it helps, I can add some English to it.

"Harumph... yes...yes... good show! Harumph... indeed!"
