I can't seem to find a old time burger shack anymore.
« on: November 22, 2008, 05:55:55 AM »
I wonder if it's the same with the rest of you.

In Vegas, I'm having trouble finding a old greasy spoon type burger joint. The kind that's not a Wendy's, McDonalds, Jack in the Box, In-N-Out (Although they are awesome), Carl's Jr or whatever.

I used to see the family type burger places all the time when I was growing up... and now I don't see them anymore.

Is it just here in Vegas are are you having the same experience that I'm having?

Haven't really looked for one in a very long time. If I'm in the mood for burgers then I've got a Wendy's, Checkers, Burger King and McDonald's all within 5 minutes of me. Of course I can always cook them at home too but I've been more into tacos lately. *nods*

No, it's prettymuch the same here in NY.

As far as chains, Sonic makes a great burger, and we're finally getting one in my town - cool. Red Robin is coming too, and I hear they are good.

Wish we'd get a White Castle here - there are a few closer to the city. They're really good, too.

The other chains are so-so in my opinion.

YES! Sonic is awesome. When I was in Texas, I shrieked when I saw one. I hadn't had one in about 20 years since I lived in Arkansas. We have them here in Nevada and they are good.

Still... I miss the Mom and Pop type places. They just tasted... different. Even though the food is probably from the same supplier... it was the variations that made it unique.

Home sick?  ;)

Anyway, home cooked meals can be very different depending on what your BG is and where you are though.  Personally, I think Diner type of food is probably as close to "true American" cooking as you can get.  Alton Brown had a good show where he and his gang motor biked up the Mississippi river and eating all the local food.

In cold nights like this, I like some good Pho, or Sichuan dry noodles, but a good beef brisket with shantong and egg noodles are nice as well.  It's too bad that when I went to school in the US that nobody had a decent noodle restaurant, but the BBQ and the Steaks are to die for.

That's one thing I like about my hometown. You have alot of places to eat from the national chains to the local grease buckets.

We have a couple of great burger joints that have operated for decades and are set to go for decades to come.

Speaking of which.. I wish I could find a good Ramen style shop. Not neccissarily Ramen but just a place that does various types of asian style soup and noodle dishes.
