Bioshock went gold btw

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=647028

Ships on the 21st and there is a limited edition one with a big daddy figurine and some extras in it. I'm almost definitely going to pick this one up.

Looks interesting, I'm contemplating buying it myself.

*ponders*

Yeah, it's indeed about time I quit WoW. Again. :dizzy:

I have my eye on it, but I'll wait - from the videos, it just seems a little too "run and gun" for the SS2 comparisons it's getting. Might be fun multiplayer, though.

Downloading the demo right now on XBL. Maybe I can tear myself away from All Pro Football 2k8 long enough to actually play.

Eh. Its not Hellgate.
How can I feel anything for a game that wont let me run around London with a female avatar called Lara while beating the snot out of demons with a cricket bat?

Exactly. I can't.
That is all.

Ok, here are a few impressions:  (note, I have since revised my impressions in another post, so feel free to ignore the initial impressions of someone who really wanted this to be SS3, was disappointed with that at first, then learned to live with it.)

Good: Very creepy... for awhile,

interesting location,

nice graphics (looks great on my 1080p LCD),

"powers" are cool (setting people on fire is fun!)

Beginning of the game and going to the "Rapture" place was neat (really had my hopes up, as the first five minutes are cool.)

Bad:

I really feel like they are trying to do "too much". It seemed like they crammed a surprise every 8 feet. I don't think this was a "stand alone" or "middle of the game" demo - I think this was the start to the game, so I have to think the actual game is "chock full of so many surprises you won't be surprised" too. To be honest, it reminded me of playing DnD at 12 - *every* room we went into *had* to have an encounter or something happening. Note to developers: It stops being creepy when you enter a room and say "ok, let's wait for the surprise".

It's also fairly linear. Wall of flames over here, small pile of debris that for some reason can't be moved over there... looks like I have to go this way...

In one room, without warning, I tripped an "alarm" which then procedes to send endless waves of flying gunships at you while a VERY annoying (and loud) alwarm beeps. They even have a counter so you know how long this will last (60 EXTREMELY SLOW seconds)   I proceded to do this three times in a row - this is a TERRIBLY STUPID design decision. It's just... really fucking annoying. I don't play games to get annoyed. I hope there's way to shut this off or such - this would really, really suck if this was a gameplay element. Aside from the breaking guns, the alarms were the worst part of SS2.

My Verdict

Probably not a buy here until a big price drop or word of some decent multiplayer through XBL - 2-4 player co-op would be nice...

OMFG BIOSHOCK DEMO FTW

I disagree with most of your 'bad' analysis, Owl.  It sounded like you expected more of a survival horror vibe and less of a shooter.  There were bad guys in virtually every room, yeah, but I didn't feel like most of them were trying to surprise me- they were just bad guys who needed killin'.  If I thought the game was focused more on surprises I'd agree with your "it stops being creepy" analysis, but since I think it's equal parts shooter and survival horror, if there were only bad guys every five or six rooms I'd have been pretty bored.  Instead I expect lots of 'no surprise' enemies with the odd 'surprise!' enemy mixed in to make me jump when I become complacent, whereas it sounded like you thought every single bad guy was trying to be surprising.  I mean, come on, splicers are basically crack heads.  How many crack heads do you know with the self control and stealthiness to launch a TERRIFYING AMBUSH!?  Actually I can't really think of any bad guys that I thought were supposed to be surprises in the classical sense.  Most of the horror and ambience came from the world.

And yeah, it was linear, but it was the demo.  They were trying to introduce the world, the combat system, the inventory, and all the pretty pictures.  There isn't exactly a ton of time for a branching and expansive world in a half hour demo.  Lots of things (size of the city, quest management system, good maps) make me think it won't be linear at all in the actual game.

As for the alarm, well, no offense, but it sounds like you noobed that up to hell and back.  Did you read all the info about the security systems in the help menus?  I tripped that thing once then I unloaded into it with the pistol.  No more alarms.  The little flying robots come at you one at a time- shock one with your lightning bolt and it's usually stunned, then run up to it and hit 'x' and you can hack it.  Hack it successfully (which is pretty damn easy, I gotta imagine it will be more complicated in the real game with stats and suchlike) and it follows you around shooting at your enemies.  Little flying machinegun bodyguard?  Yes please.  I will call him George.

In the real game you'll be able to use magic or hax on cameras/security stations to shut them off or put them on your side or sneak by them or do whatever else you want.  I thought the security system was pretty badass.

Than's Verdict: I'm gonna buy this bitch the day it comes out and I can barely wait.

edit: The one thing that did irritate me is that when you're carrying around the wrench he keeps fucking waving it around and smacking it against his palm.  I felt like my guy had ADD.  Just hold the fucking thing still until you need to crush somebody's brains with it!

I disagree with most of your 'bad' analysis, Owl.

After playing it again (and again), I have to say, I disagree with myself as well.

Yes, I *was* expecting more of a "creep" game (like SS2, which was "barely" a shooter.) This is definitely more "shooter" than SS2. That's why my initial reactions were what they were.

But after more time with it, I've decided that yes, this is a buy.

This is why I don't review games for a living. My initial impressions are sometimes way off.

Dude, the wii came out, like, two years ago.  Pay attention.

Also, god, I'd LOVE to review games for a living.  Writing + video games = heaven.

Also!

I noticed that there are banners and the odd sign which read "The Great Chain" and "The Great Chain of Industry Connects Us All".  I also noticed that the main character has chain tattoos on the inside of his wrists!

COINCIDENC!?
