I need to read more. If anyone has any suggestions, ideally classic fiction thats easy to digest, let me know.

Discworld. If you haven't read it, start.

There are a lot of books, but it's well worth the effort to read them. I'm currently on the last book in the series The Shepherd's Crown. It was the last book Pratchett wrote before his death and was released posthumously by his daughter.

Not bad for the price of the 1080 with how bad the prices are getting due to bitcoin mining

Bitcoin isn't the problem anymore, since ASIC rigs are cheaper and faster at mining Bitcoins due to the type blockchain technology Bitcoin employs.

Ethereum is the big culprit these days. And from what I understand ASIC style rigs don't support the type of blockchain Ethereum and its ilk use, so GPU's (especially AMD) are still being used for that.

Aw crap. I forgot that we are in the age of multiple platforms. I'll be on Xbox.

Yeah, if I get this, it'll be for steam. I recently changed jobs and used my unused vacation to buy a sweet new gaming rig that Liz and I put togehter. (I wasn't planning on going for a GTX 1080 originally, but I was able to snag one for $615 (US) which put it pretty much the best deal I was going to find for a graphics card for the quality. (Fuck Ethereum in the ear!) And since I got a GPU that supported 4K, I naturally had to get a monitor that did so as well. So after paying more than I originally planned, I have a rig that can run pretty much any game out there at full graphics capability.

BTW, welcome back. I find it interesting that of the three of us posting in this thread, I'm the newest member of the UV.

I've never played any of the Soul Calibur games. I guess I've never been cool.

Interesting you mention energy market. I work for Schneider Electric. The company that made this application was bought by them three years ago because the application aligns nicely with the energy industry. ('Cause turbines having to be taken down in emergency is very expensive. Even worse is if you don't take it down and it explodes on you.)

I start a new software engineering position on January 22nd. It pays 8% more than my current software position and is a more senior-level position as well.

I'm going to give my notice at my current company probably on Wednesday.

Congratulations! Working with any particular stack?

.NET

The application analyzes historian data from various automated processes and determines anomalies in the data that might indicate when a component is in risk of catastrophic failure.

The main application (which I'm one of the three principal programmers on) is WinForms. There's a desire among the team to rearchitect it in WPF, which is part of the reason they wanted to hire me because no one before me had any WPF programming experience. I actually have more WPF experience than WinForms, but I began Windows programming in MFC, which is the precursor to WinForms.

There is also a Web component of the application and data analysis algorithms which are handled by other members of the team.

I'll also be doing a bit of SQL programming, though, there are some on the team that are focused on the database side of things.

So essentially, I'm doing full-stack desktop development, with a concentration on the desktop front and back ends. I would like to get a bit more experience in Web Dev, though.

I've been feeling disgruntled with my job search. I had a temporary job for 4 months, that I quite enjoyed, but was let go earlier than expected (all temps, not just me). I've applied for dozens of jobs since then, even gotten a few offers that I've turned down because they just didn't feel right for me. Most of the people who call me are recruiting companies, who usually only offer temp jobs, and exist to make money off you. I don't want to deal with them anymore really. Maybe i'll just start my own fucking company!

What types of jobs are you looking for?

Something along the lines of the original inhabitants of Earth as detailed in Douglas Adams's The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. (I.e. Ark B of the Golgafrinchans) A vault full of hairdressers and telephone sanitation engineers and other such occupations.

I backed Divinity Original Sin 2 on Kickstarter and have been playing it. It's fun.

We should appoint a leader, someone to blame when things inevitably go tits up.

Since I'm the admin with the longest tenure, I guess it falls to me...to appoint Blue Cross for the job.

If for any reason he is unable to fulfill his duty as scapegoat, Swash will be the backup. Never mind the fact that Swash last posted four years ago.

(I could rescind Swash's admin privileges, but that would involve work. Less actual work than making this post did, admittedly, but it would be useful work, which instantly means I should't do it. Because if I actually do something useful it'll raise people's expectations and then I'll feel compelled to meet and or exceed them which will just make them expect even more and the cycle will never stop. And eventually people will be disappointed by my not living up to those expectations. So I do nothing because I care about all of your mental well being.)

Pipboy 2000 would have my back on this if he were around.

(I think this post has now covered all admins that haven't posted in the thread. Solwyn's just staff, so his only mention is this footnote.)
