I think it's safe for work, but it shows people in a shower. Probably along the lines of pg-13

Safe for my job anyway.

Unwashed Village / Love those Ta-Tas (not what you think)

Yeah I didn't make the name of the blog. But go figure.

Here's an excerpt. :

Quote
The New York Times devotes an entire editorial condemning the Tata Nano. Columnist and author Tom Friedman calls for the Tata Nano to be “taxed like crazy.” The reason for this extreme criticism? The Tata Nano is cheap - very cheap. It is a revolutionary new car design that will cost only about $2,500 and will bring car ownership within reach of millions of new people in the developing world.

Why the hell did I put this in debate? We argue a lot about global warming in here. But who says we should boycott the Tata on the basis that it will lead to a much higher overall hamrful emission (due to everyone and their cousin in India buying one) and who things we should support it so more people will use this technology to be able to pay 2500 bucks for a 50 mpg car in the states?

Unwashed Village / For you low-budget horror fans out there
« on: March 31, 2008, 04:36:51 PM »
I finally got around to posting a few of the short films for which I've done the soundtracks.

http://www.youtube.com/user/NateDSaint

The three videos under my videos selection were all directed by the same guy, a friend of mine. The first two (Bleeding from My Eyeballs, Your Eyeballs) were done as promotions for a movie they were pitching to Lionsgate. I haven't heard any updates on it but Random Order bought the option for it, so we may see it pop up somewhere someday.

The third one was a student project for a local Movie Festival.

Let me know what you think.

Unwashed Village / Video Compression Help needed!
« on: March 18, 2008, 07:24:38 PM »
It took me forever to get this stupid video to compile, but basically all it is is a glorified powerpoint my wife is doing for a project. The idea is to burn it to DVD so they can use it as a training device at work, but I'm hitting a snag.
Basically they are still images with transitions between them, and the problem I'm having is that every compressor is trying to interpolate between the last frame of the transition and the still frame, and since it's not updating, it just freezes right there. So I get these stills that are some weird combination of the previous slide and the current slide.

Is there some setting I can use in a compressor to stop that from happening? Note: I'm doing this all in adobe premiere pro 2.0, maybe it has to do with that as well.

You can take the test and then save your results as a generated image. Here's mine.

I'm surprised that I went left at all, I'm usually in the middle or very slightly right.

Unwashed Village / STUPID CLIENTS (for venting purposes)
« on: March 12, 2008, 09:40:31 PM »
Not really a debate, but the language is bound to get blue in here, so I figured I'd put it where it belongs.

So who hates the shit out of their clients?

I'm a web developer, and I've been working for a month on this flash application that works like your typical photostrip you see on websites. However, the client wanted it to
1) dynamically load all the content from a folder he can easily update
2) have a variety of ways of viewing the individual photos, be it using the arrow keys, mousing over buttons, or clicking them
3) have each thumbnail sized picture load a bigger picture when it loads.
4) have each photo surrounded with a white border that's not on the source file
5) have each show the name of the dorm that you're viewing.

So the first one was a huge massive giant leap of a step. I finally manage to get it to work, and then he wants #2. So I find out there's a way to do it, but I have to make two copies of every image because each dorm has like 23 megs worth of images. So then that takes care of number 3, but number four is hard because it's a waste of time to outline each one if they're loading from the same file (that isn't outlined on the big file) so I have to use a flash filter called "glow" to draw a one pixel opaque while glow around each photo. Then I get the file to specify which hall you're on using an external flash variable that ties to the textbox telling you which gallery you're in.

THEN he calls me and tells me "yeah we need the photostrip to loop around, we don't want it to stop on either end."

I know there's absolutely no way to explain to him that I developed the entire architecture of the thing to work the way he ORIGINALLY wanted it, and that doing it this new way would require a complete restart.

For those of you who don't know that's called Feature Creep, when features keep creeping in and the project gets longer and longer.

Which is okay, and will happen on every project... but when you work for the state they don't understand why their features cause the deadline to be pushed back, and try to get you in trouble for it. Fortunately MY bosses know what's going on and when the Client's bosses come to nag at us they just say "well then you shouldn't have added any features."

If he e-mails me with one more change before the deadline I'm going to stab him in the eye with a protractor (or some other obscure drafting tool lying in the office).

Who's heard stuff? Who knows stuff? I'm not an insider, but I'm interested in seeing where this goes, especially with video game adaptations.

I HAVE seen the insider application where you basically play the game using a computer for rolling and basic graphics to keep track of stuff, which seemed cool.

Sorry it's on myspace, I couldn't find an equivalent on youtube. It's an attachment of Royal Tongan Marines in Kuwait, doing their awesome wardance.

My favorite part is the comment section. "hahahhahahah aa.... crazy natives... the ones in qatar are just weird"

Tongans, native to Kuwait of course.

Unwashed Village / American Identity
« on: February 18, 2008, 04:50:07 PM »
I threw this in the debate forum, although I meant it more as a sharing of opinions (some of which MIGHT be contradictory). This president's day, I've been thinking about how we Americans see our nation, and how other nations see us. On the world scene, America's reputation is greatly tarnished, but as I'm sure many of you non-US villagers can attest, that doesn't affect your opinion of we, the populace, just our idiot leadership (and possibly by relation us for allowing them to get elected).

After reading the link Doombot posted about the Aussie Identity, I started to realize that America is ridiculously diverse in opinion and identity, and I don't think any one person can sum up a list of things that identify us. So:

Americans - list some things that you feel make up the identity of the America you know.

Non-Americans - list some perceptions you have of the identity of Americans.

I'll start:

I think conflict is the essence of American culture. There are always at least two camps to any major issue, and they are usually hotly debating each other. I'm sure that's true in every nation but I'm genuinely hard-pressed to think of a single issue all Americans agree upon, other than the fact that this is the best place to live (otherwise they wouldn't live here).

With that in mind, I think the best way to describe an American is to say they are diverse. But, three examples to get the ball rolling.

1) Pride in national sports heroes: the UK has David Beckham, and he's a big deal. To anyone from Colorado, John Elway is a GOD.
2) The "conservative" ethic - no matter how liberal or conservative, every American has this ideal that the world was better at some point in the past and they need to go back to it (aka pre-Civil War for some people, the return of the Clinton Administration for others).
3) Hatred of Paris Hilton - If you like her, you're not an American.
