Unwashed Village / Re: God, I hate Windows...
« on: August 05, 2014, 10:54:31 PM »
I'm a pagan.

I have a Macbook Pro that hasn't been booted in OSX since I installed Windows 8 when I got it :p

Windows isn't perfect, but I've had less problems with Windows than I've had with OSX and various Linux distros. I've spent two days changing the resolution on a Linux machine when it output to a composite cable. And various other tasks that would be trivial in Windows just aren't implemented yet in Linux. For the most part, it's not the fault of the Linux kernel itself - it's just the average linux application seems to be of a worse quality than a similar windows application (or rather: the selection is much larger, making it easier to find a good one). My experience with Linux is summed up by the quote: "Linux is only free if your time has no value".

That being said, I do own a Synology NAS, which runs on Linux.

OSX is ok, I suppose, if you're doing basic tasks. But as soon as you venture into uncharted territory, the beast that is Unix shows its face, and everything becomes much more complicated than it should be. It is relatively user friendly for basic users, but as a power user, I am annoyed by the abstractions like dragging a new application into the applications folder to install it, and dragging the DVD-Drive into the bin to eject it. (Makes even less sense for mounted .isos).

Windows has it's quirks, but it is easier to find an answer online as there are a lot more people using it.

The only system I've ever encountered malware on, or been hacked on is the Linux device, which I find quite hilarious.

Did you try BG Tutu? I got the BG:EE on steam, but wonder if the Tutu version is actually better..

Most certainly do! Despite me not posting a lot here, I love that people still check in every few years/decades..

Unwashed Village / Arise Villagurs, vile spammers at our gates!

Ok, so we are getting hundreds of new members every week. This is all good, but none of these members are actual people; they are bots wanting to sell us time share apartments and prescription drugs.

So, as a safety measure, we will need some random questions that anyone can answer, but are difficult for bots to parse. Please fire away, and I'll add them to the cycle of questions for new members.

A few examples:

'To prove you are not a bot, type 'rutabaga' in the answer field.'
'In what year did the second World War end?'
'What is the name of the prequel to Fallout 2? (lower case)'

I have no idea why it suggests these (well, the last one makes sense):

what is the time
what is the meaning of life
what is the time in usa
what is the american dream
what is the time in denmark

I demand to know where the British got that ship!

I, for some reason, got 13 copies to give away. Personally, I think 42 would have been a more appropriate number.

I agree that manually updating the firmware might do the trick. I've long since given up on inkjet printer as I either: use a lot of ink (which costs me a lot of money) or use very little ink, which means the cartridges dry up, and I have to buy new ones (which costs me a lot of money).

I bought a colour-laser two years ago, and I haven't seen a warning about low toner level so far, and it even came with an extra set of cartridges.

Well.. Technically, you don't have to kill yourself to win a Darwin award. You can 'just' castrate yourself.

55
As a multiple Darwin award winner I can safetly say that the reward was overated anyway.

Wait.. You have removed your DNA from the human gene pool multiple times?

56
Well.. Actually good news ;)

My fiance gave birth to a baby girl, and I now the proud father of a 3600g milk to weird yellow poop conversion machine.

Now, I have 15 years to take a hunting license and even less time to find out which would be the funniest thing to intentionally mis-teach her.

TL;DR: Yay!

I fear how well games will run across the atlantic, but I am more than willing to try a game of L4D2.

Merry Christmas everyone.

I got some clothes, perfume and various tid-bits, but my lovely girlfriend went through the trouble of getting me a very, very geeky gift:

A Raspberry Pi, complete with case, Wi-Fi adapter, power supply, SD card, some IR-LEDs and an IR receiver. All of the above being compatible with the raspberry I got.

Awesomeness +1

Another passing stop in from me.

Things have gone incredibly well on the relationship front - we're both on the same wavelength, want the same things and get along brilliantly at all times, so now after all those years of single life, I'm engaged and getting married at the end of next year.
Congratulations! Awesome news.

Y'know. I know the Village is dead and all, but it's still very nice to hear from people that they are well.
