Unwashed Village / Blue Cross is in Trouble!!!
« on: September 09, 2010, 05:32:35 PM »
First time this spam trick was used on me - it (supposidly) came from Blue Cross:

************
I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, sorry I did not inform you about my trip.I actually made a quick travel to Liverpool in (United Kingdom) and unfortunately attacked and mugged at gun point on the way to my hotel where i stayed, all cash, credit card and cell were stolen off but luckily for me is that i still have my passports with me.

I`ve been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and my return flight leaves anytime from now but I'm having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let me leave until i settle the bills.

Am freaked out at the moment and i need your help right away.

Unwashed Village / How did I miss this??

Friggen priceless...

How could we ever go back to the way we were, where I take advantage of your clear attraction to me so I can have someone at my beck and call? That part of our friendship means so much to me.

Unwashed Village / We need a reboot
« on: December 17, 2009, 03:45:46 PM »
This is sad, but true... we're dying a slow death here. Not that we'll ever bring it back to its heyday, but we can do better than this.

A suggestion:

One forum - Let's go back to one general forum, where everything goes (figuratively and literally). We don't have the membership to support multiple forums. If stuff goes too fast and gets knocked off due to link posts, arguments, etc, so be it. I'd rather too fast than too slow.

Then a mass e-mail announcing such.

Thoughts?

Unwashed Village / Anyone ever been on a cruise? Tell me things...
« on: September 07, 2009, 06:13:35 AM »
The wife and I are going on our first cruise in 3 weeks. Norwegian cruise lines, up to Halifax, St John, Bar Harbor, etc etc. Got a seriously nice penthouse suite. We always get a really nice room when we travel, but I didn't realize the awesome perks you get as a suite guest on a cruise.... get this - we get a butler. If I want pizza and beer at 4am, they will bring it to me. We get on the boat before anyone, leave before everyone, get to eat in special restaurants not open to everyone, etc etc... damn!! And I just wanted a little more room.

Anyway, anyone every cruised? Tell me the things I'll wish I'd have thought of.

Unwashed Village / iPod Games
« on: August 14, 2009, 05:31:09 AM »
I got an iPod touch the other day - really neat little gadget. I got a few games (chess, a word game, The Quest, Tiger Woods, Trival Pursuit) - anything I should know about (particularly, any decent turn based strategy games? This would seem a great platform for a Heroes of Might and Magic type of thing)

And c'mon UV - wake up!!!

Unwashed Village / Happy Birthday Jen

It's even written on my calendar :)

I suck at finding toasters and such, so starting the b-day thread will have to do (it's 12:44am here on the East Coast)

Unwashed Village / Bwanno - FOUND!!!
« on: April 20, 2009, 03:19:13 AM »
The Breeders - Cannonball. 1993. Thank you XM Radio.

Ok, so it doesn't exactly say "bwanno", but upon listening, you can clearly see where I got that from. Listening to it now, the song isn't even that good (it's decent, but a bit too disjointed).

Now that that's done, time to turn my attention that movie with that one dude. Maybe there was a skull somewhere. And a car. Definitely a car.

You know the one I mean??

Unwashed Village / Official X-Box Magazine Reviews Fallout 3
« on: October 19, 2008, 01:36:51 AM »
Gives it a 10.

Some observations:

They say it is a bit like "Oblivion with guns" in a scale/adventuring sense, which they welcomed (although they said the combat, setting, etc was vastly different)

The game will end when you finish the final quest. But it sounds like the game makes it obvious that "this is it, so go wrap up whatever else you want before proceeding"

Action Points are related to the VATS (the targeting system). AP's slowly regenerate (probably like mana in oblivion). Sounds good - Was wondering how they were going to do that.

Many more voice actors.

Tons of involved, interesting sidequests (likely a 50-hour game)

Like Oblivion, third person is really not a viable option

Looks like you can recruit party members

No mention of the dreaded (or liked) "leveling". Not sure what to make of that, but I was cool with the leveling in Oblivion (except for highwaymen in glass armor, etc), so i really don't care either way.

So I guess from the review, your fears/hopes for the game are confirmed. If you hated the whole idea of what they were doing, well, this is indeed the game you were fearing they'd make. If you really liked Oblivion and (like me) were looking forward to seeing the FO world in first person, this is the game for you.

28th can't get here fast enough.

Unwashed Village / My review of Windows Vista and Office 2007
« on: September 14, 2008, 06:37:27 AM »
Finally bought a shiny new PC, and moved up to Vista (and the new Office). Was a little concerned, because I have a *lot* of older software that I like (like my HTML editor) and need (like my EDI mapping software, written in 1993, that I still have two or three clients for.) And I write for a living, and the reviews on the new Word have been horrid (although I suspect by the tone of most that it's simply because stuff was moved around.)

So anyway, after a week, this is what I have to say:

Why the @#$% is everyone whining? They're fine.

Especially Office - nicely done, MS, particularly in regards to the new Word. Love it. Everything, even the EDI stuff that was written for 3.1, worked fine. The only thing was I had to mess around with the printer a bit to get it to work (HP doesn't make a driver for Vista, but you know, I blame them more than MS - make a driver for your printers, ok?) But with a workaround I found online, I got it going.

Unwashed Village / Holy Overrated, Batman!! (spoilers)
« on: August 09, 2008, 04:54:26 AM »
The Dark Knight.... sucked. There, I said it.

I'm stunned at the press and reviews this thing gets. Has the bar dropped THAT low that this thing is "OMG, best Movie EVAH"??

Yes, Ledger was great. Just nailed it - a pleasure to watch him onscreen. But the rest... please.

1) Bale = pretty bad in this movie. And lose the raspy voice everytime you put on the mask.

2) WTF was that with Two-Face?? You introduce him, trot him around for a half hour, then he DIES?? Again, WTF was the point?

3) Easily a half hour to 45 min too long. Related to the above, you could have ended it with two face becoming.. well.. two face. That would have been fine. And had a decent setup for #3. Long movies are fine if they have an engaging plot - and this doesn't have one.

4) Related to the above (again), but how many "loved ones kidnapped and held in a warehouse" does a movie need?

5) Too many "climatic" fights. MORE STUFF in a movie does not = better (at least to us grumpy old fucks).

6) Moronic love triangle that went nowhere. I was never so pleased to see a female lead bite it.

7) Ahh... Gordon is alive... that's good. Care to explain how they kept that one quiet with all the mole cops? Another dumb plot point.

Ledger makes this movie. The rest is complete crap. Travis Bickel was way more of a Dark Knight (and yes, I know that's Batman's nickname of sorts)

Unwashed Village / Out for a week
« on: June 19, 2008, 05:54:27 PM »
Going to the Outer Banks in NC for a week with my family (4 groups in all - my wife and I; my brother, his wife, and their two kids; my sister, her husband, and their two kids; and my mom and her husband.) We're renting a sick beach house with 5 floors, ten bedrooms, a sports bar (mine!), an elevator, etc etc etc. Right on the beach - am verymuch looking forward to sitting on the beach with a bourbon and a cigar while watching the waves roll in. Got a brand new bottle of Knob Creek and six choice stogies from the cigar shop. I'm all set.

This should be interesting, because my brother's kids are really young (three and two), and are *always* underfoot (they are also in the "very noisy and annoying" stage of life). There will be places off-limits to them (like MY bar, already named "Owl Tavern"), but still... I might have a few more gray hairs from all the screaming. I'll bring duct tape. My sister's kids are older (6 and 8 ), and very well behaved, so they are no trouble at all.

So anyway, that'll be my week. I'll think of all of you as I'm on the beach (even you, BC!)

Unwashed Village / The 80's were somewhat embarrassing
« on: January 27, 2008, 10:38:33 PM »
OMG... I've seen "bad" videos that were just outlandish (where some fringe/niche band were obviously TRYING to be different / bad, etc.) But a lot of 80's videos by major bands were really bad without trying - these guys were serious in trying to make a "cool" video.  They failed miserably.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxxOyGK1pMk

This is too good to put in the links forum, and maybe we'll get some discussion of bad 80's bands.

Damn, never realized how much that "Sullen Madness" default skin annoyed me. Much better with a brighter look.
