So sad to visit the village again and then to read this. :( I remember Kama as one of the nicest people I've never met.

Unwashed Village / Re: Online Piracy
« on: February 27, 2011, 12:47:08 PM »
I'm a pirate. I pirate games, movies and music and don't feel guilty about it whatsoever. The music, movie and gaming industry made record profits last year.

Music: I honestly haven't bought a cd in years and the way they are priced in the Netherlands I'm not going to for a very long time. I do go to concerts, though.

Movies: I'm a movie buff and I watch hundreds of movies every year. More than I could ever pay for. So in addition to the average of 10 films i see in the cinema every year and the 8 to 10 dvds/blurays I buy, I download a lot. I also download and watch a lot of really old movies that aren't even in print anymore (eventhough they're still copyrighted). I also run a bittorrent tracker geared completely towards bad movies, cult films and unknown gems. I'm sure Night Owl would love the place if he pirated movies cause it has stuff he wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. If anyone wants an invite, send me a message. ;)

Gaming: I don't think there's any denying pc gaming is in decline. One of my favorite pc gaming magazines, PC Gameplay changed their name to Gameplay last year and started reviewing console games as well, simply because not enough pc games were coming out. However I don't think this is because of piracy, as much as it is fueled by the paranoia about piracy at the publishers side. So what they do is install draconian DRM measures that actually punishes their own customers instead of the pirates who only have to wait for a crack and then can effortlessly play the game that legitimate customers cannot. I think this is what will hurt sales more than actual piracy.

That said, looking at the list of multi platform and pc games that have to come out this year (Bulletstorm, Mass Effect 3, The Witcher 2, Crysis 2, Homefront, Dragon Age 2, etc) and how well indie gaming has done last year, I think the pc gaming industry is FAR from dead. And if you look at my Steam account. I have bought almost 100 games over the last 4 years. I tend to download games and buy them later when they become cheaper.

So, I don't know if I'm a typical pirate, but I think I give as much as I can and take everything. A lot of the movies and games I played/watched through piracy I'll probably buy at a later date when I have the funds or when the prices have gone down. The big mistake record, gaming and movie production companies make is thinking that every pirated copy represents a lost sale. This has never been the case.

Hi Hoopy. Man, it's sad to see the village in this state. One reply after a week? :(

I just thought I'd drop in and say hi to everybody. It's been a while since I wandered into the village, but I'm still keeping the board in my bookmarks. :)

These days most of my internet time goes into cinemageddon.net, which is a bittorrent site I'm running that's geared towards b movies, cult films and unknown hidden gems. If any of you would like an invite shoot me a pm. ^_^

Anyway, hi!

Great post Hoopy. I think I made some 'mistakes' with the skill leveling perks.

While Hoopy's post is definitely good for creating a character that is a real powerhouse, that does make the game a bit more boring at higher levels. I finished the game once now and near the end I felt almost invincible.

Also, now I've finished the game I also have some criticism. For one the ending was a bit of a let down for me. I'm not going to spoil it, but there was a situation in which one of my companions could have helped out. I even got the chance to ask him and he flat out refused, even though he had done a similar task for me earlier in the game. You guys will know what I'm talking about when you get there. :) And the second let down about the ending is that the ending slideshow basically recaps your last actions and your alignment, but then it fails to mention anything about the long term effects your actions had on the places you went to earlier in the game like in the old Fallout games. For example whether you blew up or disarmed the bomb in Megaton doesn't even get a mention. Bethesda really dropped the ball on that one.

My second complaint is that with all the skill books, perks every level and the bobbleheads it isn't that difficult to become good at everything. Fallout 1 and 2 always needed you to specialize more. Also, leveling is pretty fast and you can reach level 20 without exploring even half of the map, which as I mentioned earlier takes the challenge and sense of progression out of the game. I've started a game with a new character and installed a mod that makes me get less experience and I cranked the difficulty up to very hard. So I hope that'll be more of a challenge. :)

All in all it's a great game, but there's definitely room for improvement.

I killed Burke right after he shot the sheriff (because I thought he was gonna shoot me.) Everyone ran away, though - looks like the game really didn't want me to do that :)

I actually saved the sheriff. I went into VATS mode as soon as I saw Burke going for his gun and shot the pistol out of his hand. He then ran into the kitchen, picked up a knife and attacked me. Then I blew his head off. :D

I'm having much fun with this game :)

Hey, Shady. Long time no see. What've you been up to?

Just busy with life and stuff. I finished my MCSA training and I'm now trying to find a job in networking. I'm tired of being unemployed. The big plan, if nothing goes wrong is find a job, get some work experience, then apply for a visa to Canada and move in with my girlfriend there. Got a job interview today, so wish me luck. :)

This is one of my favorite videos from the 80's. (And there are boobies around 1:45 so it's NSFW):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86_FhNvjCSI

Note that the nudity was censored when shown on TV.

I LOVE this song!  Whatever happened to Golden Earring?  Twilight Zone and Radar Love still sound good even today.

They're still playing at clubs and medium sized halls here in Holland, but they haven't released a new album with original material since 1999 now.

I mean, I can think of many worse ways to go than constantly remembering good things, even if they make no sense.

I suppose that makes a certain amount of sense. I don't seem to remember them talking about bad things like they happened yesterday.

Unfortunately that happens too. My grandpa isn't the easiest person to live with and as my grandma's Alzheimer's is getting worse, she's getting more and more resentful towards him. I think cause she remembers a lot of things she'd rather not remember. She's now going into the stage that she's actually starting to forget people and she's becoming apathetic (motoric functions are failing and she won't talk unless someone speaks to her). So it's really a sad disease that is confusing for the person suffering from it and it ends with them not knowing anyone and only remembering things from far back. A really scary way to go, imo. :(

Unwashed Village / I'm back
« on: September 20, 2007, 08:18:50 PM »
I'm finally back from my month long trip to Toronto. I did many touristy things, met some really cool UV people and also took a roadtrip to Quebec and went to the Toronto International Film Festival where I saw a lot of movies. Anyhoo, don't have much else to say. So hi. :)

I was very sad to hear about what happened to Steve today. It's like Doombot says, he was part of the unwashed village and he will be missed dearly. I know he changed nicknames a couple of times over, but for me he'll always be the cheeky Darkfox we knew and loved. I'll definitely have a drink to him tonight. Farewell Steve.
