Why did no one else ever think of this issue with flesh eating zombies?  ;)

Unwashed Village / A few kudos for some Democrats
« on: February 04, 2009, 11:12:08 PM »
Kudos to Senate Democrats and specifically Claire McCaskill for planning to take some more pork out of the stimulus bill. The link goes to another positive story about McCaskill as she's the one behind capping CEO pay at companies who've accepted corporate welfare from the government. I think both are positive moves and certainly have strong public support. The stimulus currently is down to 37% approval according to a Rasmussen poll. Republican efforts to block the bill are pretty meaningless considering they never once bothered to cut pork out of any budgets they came up with while they were in power. So it's pretty obvious it's just a political stunt. One that may work in our favor but a stunt none the less.

Also, kudos to Obama for increasing the military budget by 8%. It would have been easy to come in and start making cuts to appease the far left portion of his base but to his credit he's not going to jeopardize the war effort by doing so.

Unwashed Village / Too little, too late? Steele in as RNC chair

This should have happened back in '06 but Steele was passed over for the spot because he wasn't pro-amnesty and Mel Martinez was. Had it happened back then it would have shown progress in the party that perhaps could have turned some minority voters' heads (even though appointments like Rice and Powell didn't seem to). Now it just looks like the Republicans saying, "Hey look! We got one too!"

They had a chance to be leaders in this area in '06 and blew it IMO. Still, Steele is a good conservative and could be really good for the party so it will be interesting to see how it works out.

Unwashed Village / Obamahitler the child killer!
« on: January 24, 2009, 10:42:14 AM »

Missiles fired from suspected US drones killed at least 15 people inside Pakistan today, the first such strikes since Barack Obama became president and a clear sign that the controversial military policy begun by George W Bush has not changed.

Security officials said the strikes, which saw up to five missiles slam into houses in separate villages, killed seven "foreigners" - a term that usually means al-Qaeda - but locals also said that three children lost their lives.

*hears crickets...and furious backpedaling...or furiously backpedaling crickets...it's hard to tell*

Just to be clear, my point isn't that the attack was a bad thing. It continued a Bush policy of applying pressure to the terrorists in the region. If kids died, that's very sad. However, in a war, it's inevitable that some innocent lives will be lost. I'm just wondering where the "Bushitler" "war crimes" people are? Isn't this the sort of thing they've been screaming about for years now? Is it ok now that a Democrat is responsible for it? Just wondering.

Unwashed Village / NYT - hey those guys in Gitmo really are dangerous
« on: January 23, 2009, 11:20:03 PM »
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/world/middleeast/23yemen.html?_r=3

Now that Obama is President I guess it's time to start the furious backpedaling. I'm curious as to what the people who have been crying for them to get trials are going to be saying when more of them end up freed and turn right around and go back to attacking us.

The article goes on in detail about Abu Sayyaf al-Shihri who was returned to Saudia Arabia, went to Yemen and helped the attack on our embassy there.  I especially love this part -

However, under a heading describing reasons for Mr. Shihri’s possible release from Guantánamo, the documents say he claimed that he traveled to Iran “to purchase carpets for his store” in Saudi Arabia. They also say that he denied knowledge of any terrorists or terrorist activities, and that he “related that if released, he would like to return to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, wherein he would reunite with his family.”

And he wasn't telling the truth? I'm shocked! SHOCKED!!!  :stunned:

For those not old enough to have played the Zork games, they were awesome text adventure games (no graphics at all). This was back when we wore onions on our belts, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.

Unwashed Village / Meh, what's another $150 million at this point anyway

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090117/ap_on_go_pr_wh/inauguration_spending

Obama's inaugural committee has raised more than $41 million to cover events ranging from a Philadelphia-to-Washington train ride to a megastar concert with Beyonce, U2 and Bruce Springsteen to 10 official inaugural balls. Add to that the massive costs of security and transportation — costs absorbed by U.S. taxpayers — and the historic inauguration will produce an equally historic bill.

In 2005, Reps. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., and Jim McDermott, D-Wash., asked Bush to show a little less pomp and be a little more circumspect at his party.

"President Roosevelt held his 1945 inaugural at the White House, making a short speech and serving guests cold chicken salad and plain pound cake," the two lawmakers wrote in a letter. "During World War I, President Wilson did not have any parties at his 1917 inaugural, saying that such festivities would be undignified."

First off, grats to the AP for A) figuring out that spending all this money right now is pretty out of touch with what's going on and B) actually reporting on it since it's Democrats spending the cash.

Second, don't take this post as a knock on Obama as I'm 99.9% sure that McCain and the Republicans would have done the same type of thing had they won. It's simply another example of how our politicians live in their own little world which has its own rules and reality. And the sad thing is that Democrat voters aren't going to call them out on this except for maybe a few who will probably be immediately shouted down because this inauguration is "historic". Yep, it's a historic waste of money. So much for caring about the little guy, eh?

Unwashed Village / Interesting...WoT movies and games on the way
« on: January 15, 2009, 11:49:18 PM »
http://bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&boardid=1&threadid=94835&id=0&view=flatnew&start=20

There was a Wheel of Time fps a few years back that didn't do very well. The demo wasn't enough to sell me on it. I'm wondering how on earth they plan to do movies unless they just plan on not finishing the story or ending it in some other way (the last book still hasn't been written and the original author passed away). Not to mention the length of the series. Granted there is a ton of stuff that could be cut out as it probably should have been cut out of the books too.

Still the series is one of my favorite ones to read back through. The series is so long that I find that my likes and dislikes of certain characters shift as the series progresses. I didn't like Mat Cauthon at all at first but he became my favorite character after book 5 or so. Perrin had been my favorite up to that point but in the later books he becomes a whiny twit. I really didn't care particularly for any of the female characters until the last few books when Egwene became a favorite.

Anyway, I figured there had to be at least a few people here that also read the books and might be interested in any coming games or movies.

Unwashed Village / Beautiful women can't be trusted?
« on: January 14, 2009, 12:21:16 PM »
Linky

Beautiful women may be more likely to have affairs because of a sex hormone linked to attractiveness and flirtatiousness, new research has found.

This of course means that none of the UV women can be trusted.
