Title: Wasteland 2 Released!
Post by: KMD on September 29, 2014, 07:02:37 PM
Shame on you guys for not being excited! Fallout 1 was the "spiritual successor" to Wasteland which came out for the Commodore 64 and Apple II wayyy back in 1988. For decades, people have been asking for a sequel, and thanks to crowdfunding, inXile has developed a sequel. Its available on Steam for $39.99 for windows, mac, and linux.

Someone let us know how it is

Edit: Wasteland 1 is available on GOG for $5.99, but can be found on less reputable sites for free since its essentially abandonware. Be prepared to configure your system though.

"Wasteland 2 is unflinchingly dark; players must make horrible life and death choices along the way and witness the consequences of their actions."

Cool.

I've been a kickstarter backer of it since practically the beginning.

I also beta-tested it (not that I had a whole lot of time to do so, though.)

My name is also apparently in the supporter credits, though I haven't actually checked that. (Yeah, I paid enough to get that perk just because I like inXile and loved Wasteland the original, even if the gameplay itself hasn't really aged well.)

Oh, and a former UV'er from way back in the day, Brother None--also known as Kharn on other forums--is working for them in a contractor role helping them out with marketing and distribution. He's also an admin at No Mutants Allowed which is a community that's been around since FO1.

I got Wasteland 2 a while ago, it's actually really great as it successfully brings old school RPGs into the 21st century. I'd probably say that it's one of the most fun RPGs I've played recently, though it isn't completely flawless, I'd totally recommend it.

I like that there's a bar in Damonta called No Mutants Allowed which has a bunch of dead members of the No Mutants Allowed community. (Including former UV'er Rosh.)

And there's a hammer in there called "The Order", which is no doubt a reference to that community of which a few of the NMA members were also members of. (And a couple UV'ers from back in the day.)

I've played the fuck out of it.  Dislikes:  very reliant on save SCUMing.  likes:  Everything else.

And the chances of success and critical failure are total bullshit.

I critically failed far more often than the odds would predict, and succeeded far less often. And a 25% success would frequently have me failing 10 or more times in a row (save scumming). The odds of failing a 1/4 chance 10 times in a row are ridiculous.

And then the silo nuke bugged on me. In trying to spread the XP around, I had my repair guy try to take it out rather than my demo guy. My repair guy had a 35% critical fail rate...and failed every time. Every time. So I edited the XML file that had his stats to give him 10 in repair just to check out what would happen. With a now 100% success rate...he critically failed and set off the nuke? WTF?

So demolitions guy it was.

(And I know that you can actually succeed in repair with this because I did so the first time, but didn't realize that I shut down the computer without getting the contents of the attached safe, so I reloaded so I could get the safe. And then the game glitched.)
