Title: God, I hate Windows...
Post by: BlueCross on May 13, 2014, 10:24:44 PM
Incompetent design, poorly implemented, inefficient, buggy, incompatibility issues a mile (or two) long, non-intuitive, version changing inconsistentancies ...  and a few dozen more major problems but I'm out of breath now.

For the first few years, I was rather forgiving of them but it's been what...  over 20 years since Windows 3.1?  More bloat, more problems, more crap..

And Intel is not without blame in this fiasco.  They've been making processors since at least the early 80s, and still never got memory architecture correct.

And yes, there is a 'reason' for the current rant but it's not like I don't have this stomach churning misadventure with MicroSoft two to three times a month anyway...

I've been using OSX personally for a few years now, we have a fully windows 7 network at work which is generally reliable. Except for very rare gaming I stick to OSX at home, just feels better put together.

MACs are too expensive.

linux doesn't support most of what I do.

I don't know what OSX can (or can't do).

I find windows helps a lot. I'm thinking of switching to linux though because I heard it's user friendlier than windows 8.

Helps what?  Oh wait, I know!  It makes you forget you have a canker sore!

I've had my frustrations with Windows too, but after years of bouncing between different different Linux distros, I've found that its still the best working desktop PC OS for what I want to do. It may not always work perfectly but it usually works with everything, something that I definitely can't say about Linux.

I'm sure you knew this, but most of the bloat is caused by compatibility with older programs; I can still play some games that are 14+ years old with few issues. Thats pretty cool. But an install takes up, what, like 12 GBs? Thats 6 times the space on the entire HDD of my old windows 98 computer.

I have only used OSX a couple of times, but something about it just seemed "off", I can't really explain why. Right now i'm using a bastardized Windows 7 with an OSX theme so it can look purrrty. Oh and pretty soon, you'll be forced to use Android which is even more annoying.

My macbook was pretty cheap, but that's mostly due to picking up a broken one and fixing it.

You can play fallout on OSX... That's all you need to know surely.

You spelled paint.net incorrectly.

but it usually works with everything

Basically, that's the only reason I use Windows.

If linux worked well with everything I use, I'd be using linux.

Depending on what you need windows support for you could try wine out on the mac and Linux. Quite a lot of config unless there's a pre made wrapper though.

I'm a pagan.

I have a Macbook Pro that hasn't been booted in OSX since I installed Windows 8 when I got it :p

Windows isn't perfect, but I've had less problems with Windows than I've had with OSX and various Linux distros. I've spent two days changing the resolution on a Linux machine when it output to a composite cable. And various other tasks that would be trivial in Windows just aren't implemented yet in Linux. For the most part, it's not the fault of the Linux kernel itself - it's just the average linux application seems to be of a worse quality than a similar windows application (or rather: the selection is much larger, making it easier to find a good one). My experience with Linux is summed up by the quote: "Linux is only free if your time has no value".

That being said, I do own a Synology NAS, which runs on Linux.

OSX is ok, I suppose, if you're doing basic tasks. But as soon as you venture into uncharted territory, the beast that is Unix shows its face, and everything becomes much more complicated than it should be. It is relatively user friendly for basic users, but as a power user, I am annoyed by the abstractions like dragging a new application into the applications folder to install it, and dragging the DVD-Drive into the bin to eject it. (Makes even less sense for mounted .isos).

Windows has it's quirks, but it is easier to find an answer online as there are a lot more people using it.

The only system I've ever encountered malware on, or been hacked on is the Linux device, which I find quite hilarious.

My macbook is the best windows machine I've ever owned. I still mostly use OSX though.
