I'm headed to Dragon-con this year, something I thought I should do whilst my health allows.
When I was looking through the guest list and the event list, I came across a favorite actress
that I admired from Farscape, Virginia Hey (She played Zhaan, if anyone has watched Farscape
in the past). Lo and behold, she teaches meditation now, and was running a seminar at the con
itself. It's rather exclusive (only room for 50 folks from a con that attracks over 50k people) so
took the plunge, and sent a quick note to the link provided explaining my poor health and how I
was keen to try Ms. Hey's seminar to see if it would help me, if they still had room. I was writing
rather late, so I expected an automated "Sorry we're full up".
Much to my suprise, I got a note back from Ms. Hey herself, saying that of course she still had
room, that my name was down and all I had to do was show up at her table! (She called me
honey too, *GLEE* ;D but she was just being friendly).
I was over the moon, to say the least. How kind of her to do that for someone she didn't know
from Adam. I spent the next few weeks in a sort of happy haze. I struck up a small corespondence
with her, asking about possible herbal remedies (She's a herbalist as well), and she gave me some
ideas to try.
She wrote to me today to tell me that she wasn't going to be at Dragon-con afterall, since a job
offer came up at the last minute, and she felt so bad about it that she wanted my address to
send a meditation cd as a way to make ammends.
Of course I was gutted, as this was the one thing at Dragon-Con that I had my heart set on. :'(
But then I thought, "How nice of her to do that for me, she could have just blown me off completely,
not told me about her absence and be non the worse for it. I'd have been devastated when I got
there but I'd have put it up to "Hollywood" types and moved on".
I sent back a rambling letter saying how torn I was between happiness at her new work and sadness
at not meeting her and learning in person.
Then I said that she owed me an afternoon tea at least and I'd bring the tim-tams. (Bubonic will know
what these are) completely tongue-in-cheek of course, I put in a few smilies to let her know that I
was kidding (mostly ;) ).
So at once I'm sad that she won't be there, and I'm happy because I may have a new friend. We'll see.
*crosses fingers, toes and anything else crossable*
At any rate, she seems to be a genuinly sweet lady, and if you're of a mind to, check out her store. It's
called "White Flower Lei" and is in Los Angeles. (Can't remember the url at the moment)
I also sent her this picture and told her "They let me out of the glass at night, I don't know who the bloke
in the blue jacket is :D "
Sorry for the ramble. Take care, and thanks for your time!

I like it when celebrity people act human.
It gives me the feeling that humanity might be able to redeem itself :)

Awesome story. =)
Very nice pose. You look very Doctor Whoish.

Naaahhh. It'll never happen.

Hmm, the scene in that photo looks vaguely familiar for some reason...oh yeah, I remember why now - I was the one holding the camera, wasn't I? ;D
I'm sad about the seminarless Dragon Con, but happy for your correspondance, chum

Oh wow! Not having any idea what Dragon Con is, I almost didn't bother reading this thread. Now I'm glad I did!! Farscape is amongst the best acted Sci Fi imho. And you can tell Virginia I said so. In fact, if you ever end up meeting with her, let me know and I'll send you over some Tim-Tams just so I can tell people the story!

He does, doesn't he! Maybe not quite David Tennant, but he certainly could have given Eccleston a run for his money!

Not that I think Star Trek or Stargate is oscar material, but I'd be the opposite there - I found Farscape to be far too immature for its own good a lot of the time and I never got into it. The premise was sound, but I just thought the way it was executed let it down badly.

I met Gary Gygax at Dragon Con once. He didn't teach me how to meditate but he did sign a Mythus book for us. ;)

I love Farscape, and I love SG-1 now that Ben Browder is in it. Basically I'm gay for Ben Browder.

Out of context is good.

Did he roll the dice when you met?
-------
Fry: "Who are you people?"
Al Gore: "I'm Al Gore. And these are my vice presidential action rangers. A group of top-nerds whose sole duty is to prevent disruptions in the space-time continuum."
Fry: "I thought your sole duty was to cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate."
Al Gore: "That, and protect the space-time continuum. Read the Constitution."
Al Gore: "To my left you'll recognize Gary Gygax, inventor of Dungeons & Dragons."
Gary Gygax: "Greetings! It's a" *rolls dice* "pleasure to meet you!"

Al Gore: Put those away before I take them away!

I believe the term you're looking for is "man crush".
It's for us straight guys that think another guy is one of the most amazing people we either know or would like to know. There's nothing sexual about it.
Unless, of course, you really are gay for Ben Browder, in which case, ignore the above.

Interesting. Maybe it's an aussie thing (since Farscape was shot here). But if you compare the acting in the first (only) four seasons of Farscape with the first four seasons of The Next Generation it can't all be bad news for Farscape. I'm a trekker from way back, but the first three or four seasons of TNG were woefully overacted.
I remember reading somewhere that a soap opera puts completely unrealistic characters in normal situations, while sci-fi puts very "human" characters in totally outrageous situations. This is probably why I liked DS9 so much. More than any other Star Trek, imho, it was really about character interactions.
Now despite Farscape being much more "tongue-in-cheek" than Trek or SG-1/Atlantis, I thought the way in which Bowder's character adjusted to being so far removed from everything he knew was very human. At first he tried to fit in, then as time went on, in order to maintain any semblance of sanity (Harvey not withstanding), he dragged earth with him, kicking and screaming. His flat out refusal to stop using idioms and pop culture references despite the fact that they made everyone around him think he was a bit touched in the head is a prime example of this.
Plus, it was just piss-funny!
Having said all that, I didn't really "get" the show until I hired it out on dvd. Watching the episodes in a reasonable time frame and in order (aussie TV is notorious for showing things out of order and at ludicrous times) made the story a lot more coherent and compelling to me.
