Title: ....3 more days....
Post by: KMD on November 08, 2011, 06:33:46 AM
Until  The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

I figured I would be "That Guy" to post first, If ya'll even care.
Seriously, the most I have been excited about a game in a while. Unfortunately, I won't be getting it for a few weeks after release. I just got a job, and I don't have the entry fee quite yet.

I remember when I first got Oblivion (for Xbox). Bought it used from a friend back in 2009 for $20.  He didn't like it because it was just a "first person sword game". I wasn't even sure if I would like it. Honestly, I think I got more fun out of that $20 than that any other. I probably logged at least 60-80 hours, which is a lot for me. Yeah the game was a bit frusterating, but I would get lost in it like no other I've ever played.

So, whos excited?

I would be if I thought I'd ever get time to play it... I've not found the time to complete FO:NV yet.

Picking it up on release day via Steam. I usually wait until games like these go on sale. Preferably with a GOTY edition that includes all the good DLC. I had to break my rule for this one because I'm going stir crazy with nothing new to play and nothing but Skyrim on the horizon.

I got into D3 beta but you're limited in it to a very small section of the game. You can only play through it so many times before boredom sets in. It's fun though and there's no NDA.

I've heard that a lot lately. I can't even believe steam has it, is there anything steam doesn't have nowadays?

One thing that I've noticed is there sheer amount of hype for this game. Especially from people who've never played or didn't like the other games in the series. Unfortunately, I think some people will be pretty disappointed. For those who don't know; Warning: this game is for nerds  ;)

Battlefield 3 (stupid origin)

All my gaming hours are thrown into the pit that is BF3 currently. I've never really got into Morrowind, and Oblivion felt broken to me due to the monster-level-scaling system. Also I never really liked the levelling system. Does anyone if these are changed in Skyrim?

Too bad, since I kinda like the universe.

From what I understand, Skyrim will follow the FO3 paradigm. Each area will have a minimum and maximum level that the creatures can be, and will adjust relative to your level within that window of levels.

And I'll be picking it up eventually, but it's rare that I pay full price for games, particularly single-player ones. Especially because Steam has great sales. Besides, I've got more than enough games in my Steam library that I haven't played that I'm not exactly in a gaming dearth anyway.

This and most EA titles.  Apparently they've even been pulling older titles from Steam to try to prop up Origin.

Must not rant about the failings of Origin...must not derail thread.

So, I've got Skyrim preordered on Amazon.  It'll cross the ocean and likely arrive while I'm on my honeymoon and with a bit of luck be waiting at the post office up the road when I get back.  That's for roughly half the price I'd pay if I bought it locally, too.  Australian game distributors gouge prices like mad then cry foul when people buy online.  Madness.

Origin! >.<

I've bought basically everything off of Steam since about the time the Canadian dollar went above about 95 cents US, maybe 3 years ago? FO3 is the last game I physically bought, all the DLC I bought online. Steam means no tax, and I'm paying the price that the distributor intended. Canadian retailers like to pretend that things here are supposed to cost more, like back in the days where our dollar was only worth 80 cents. A 60 dollar game here means a 70 dollar retail sticker plus 14% sales tax. Yes. 14%.

Sitting here waiting and hoping that Steam didn't figure out the timezone-specific release and are sticking with region based release. If it does, everyone is getting it at midnight eastern, 9pm for me. (╯゚ヮ゚)╯︵ ♥♥♥♥

Though right the Steam website isn't even responding...

Probably because their forums got hacked Sunday night and it took them until today to figure out exactly how bad the damage was.

Note that they are handling the whole business with a lot of class, as is to be expected of Valve. (cf. Sony)

Launched the game at 12:06am so there!

Made it to level 5 last night before I finally had to pass out. Went with an Orc sword & board build.

8:59pm PST!

Anyone else not had their character follow their intention due to their natural tendencies while playing?

My concept was an orc heavy fighter.. what I have is a very clanky sniper. With the exception of profession skills (both my smithing and enchanting are very high), my sneak skill is higher than my two-handed, the skill I start with a +10 bonus on. I really wanted to push heavy armor up for the perks, but due to stopping and sneaking any time I don't know what's around I've got really low armor skill. I've ended up taking a few lower rank perks in some things I wasn't planning on, and just sitting on a whole bunch. The 2h perks I was intending to take just aren't that good, took some archery ones I wasn't planning on, and just sitting on a whole bunch of perks. :|

I'm loving it so far, though I am not completely without complaint.

1. Lack of hotkeys. This slows everything down, both the mage build and the archery oriented warrior build I've started

2. Fencing stolen goods. Now, don't get me wrong, not being able to sell goods you stole would be realistic, if you could, say, go to another town to sell them. How does somebody in whiterun know a random potion I stole in another town is stolen? It should only apply to the town you stole it from, IMO.

3. I could be wrong about this, but past games show that the enemies scale with you. You also level up every 5 or 6 skill increases. Now, correct me if I'm wrong because I could be, but if you are constantly levelling up from non-combat skills, what happens when you have to fight the scaled up enemies when you're stuck with very low level combat capabilities?

4. Giants. What's the deal? Why are 10 foot tall humanoids stronger than 10 ton dragons? The one time I tried fighting a giant, not only did he one shot me, but he LITERALLY knocked me into orbit. I'm pretty sure my character's corpse hit the upper limit of the sky.

Favoriting and assigning those as 1-8 works alright, it's what I'm used to from Fallout with an extra step tacked in. I also have less things I need to hotkey.. I'm managing to restrain myself to only three weapons, so my racial, the one heal and two shouts I actually use have plenty of room.

Fencing stuff is really dumb. I stole stuff in Riverwood like a motherfuckin bandit. I get to Whiterun and everyone there magically knows it's stolen.. I got a huge amount of pickpocket skill in Riverwood and since then I've barely stolen a thing. It makes the skill incredibly underwhelming.

You fucked! The people from my warcraft guild who are just getting into it me and the other guy who have been playing like crazy have both told people to be really careful about how much you level non-combat skills if you're not comfortable with how you're killing because enemies scale with your character level, regardless of how you got those levels. I got to 20 on almost pure non-combat skills and it definitely had a big impact.

Giants are badass. They hit you with a telephone pole, but it's not super hard to dodge it most of the time especially if they're doing a power attack. Don't get hit by power attacks.

The interface is super-annoying, and I've been trying to find ways to make it better. I'm debating going ahead and trying my hand at some UI modding, see if I can figure out a way to at least hotkey combos in a manner that's much less retarded.

We'll see how it goes.

BTW, I started out with a breton spellsword, wanted to try spells in one hand and one-handed weapons in the other. I soon discovered you could dual wield bound swords and after seeing how badass that looked, I made it the focus of my build.

So far, it looks awesome and I can murder things in high speed if I can get close. I found that one-handed and conjuration worked pretty well synergistically (+damage from both sides), and you can also use some crazy enchanting (+1 handed weapon damage, applies to both weapons in dual wield attacks and power attacks). Only downside : I'm finding that stoneflesh (even with the alteration perk to make it much better when you're not wearing armor) is not powerful enough to mitigate getting arrowed to death before you can stab someone with your glowing swords.

Looks like I'll need to figure that out in order to get more awesomer.

I'm in my mid-30s now with my orc sword and board build. I'm the proud owner of several daedric artifacts all of which I found on my own through exploration. I've also found quite a few word walls out in the world but then learned that once you've seen the Greybeards as part of the main quest you can return to their leader to ask if he knows where any are located. He'll drop a side quest on you for one word at a time.

I'm also a master smith now. I just did that around level 30 and have a full suit of deadric armor. I'm currently trying to level Enchanting to a decent point so I can enchant the armor.

I just switched my stone blessing to the mage from the warrior so I can try to level up some casting skills faster. My warrior stuff was all at least in the mid-70s so it was time to switch.

I became a werewolf but found it pretty useless for a melee character so I used the cure.

Today for the first time I had to use a console command to skip to the next part of a quest as the part I was on seemed broken. I've found one cave that made me crash every time I rounded a particular corner but other than that I've had 3-4 crashes. All of those but one were due to me alt-tabbing.

Every time you say that I want to make a sword and board Nord named Fjord.

Also from what everyone's telling me, werewolf is useless UNLESS you're a melee character. I know it was for my friend the archer. I'm not sure how it'd go for my magic swordsman, but probably not great.

Right now I'm trying to run a pure archer, no melee or magic, and I've had no problems with it so far up to level 15 but I've been told it can't keep up later. Suppose I'll find out

Hrmm...well I'd never use it because it's not nearly as effective as using a weapon and shield. Also, the time it takes to change doesn't make it an effective "Oh crap" button either. So I guess it's pretty much just useless for everyone then.

I don't really know how it wouldn't be able to keep up. Magic and daggers are the only things that don't scale in damage from any base effect, only from perks (dagger's sole damage buff is the 15x backstab, no other enchants or talents apply to it). With mobs having various hard caps on their level scaling, I have very little room before there's no mobs any higher than what I see right now.

At 44 with 100 smithing, 100 enchanting, 29 enchanting (so my potion buffs while making gear sucked) and only 72 archery, meaning I don't have full Overdraw yet, this is my bow;

And this is my bow on drugs;

I'm missing a few % off my gear, you can get the bonuses to 47%, mine are 45%. I've also yet to encounter anything that I actually felt the need to use a potion to up my damage on. I barely use berserker anymore, sneak attacks off of base damage is killing basically everything.

There's actually a post on the Bethesda forums showing with hard numbers and methodology that dual wielding one-handed weapons is the highest potential dps, followed closely by archery, then two-handed, weapon and shield, and daggers dead last. You backstab almost 30% more damage with a one-handed weapon than with a dagger.

Werewolves are really meh. With decent stamina and armor perks, being a wolf I couldn't run farther than I do normally, the speed increase isn't really noticeable, and it's a huge damage loss. The only good part was it's funny to use power attacks to fling people and using it to fast-travel while encumbered (which is also rather less useful with various perks)

Level 16 Redguard Archer here (I alt with my Daedric Mace)

So much better than Oblivion in many ways. The quests have much more personality, the combat has been improved, and the new GUI is awesome.  The only bad things:

-Close combat can still be a pain in the ass, especially since I always play in first-person

-The change in skills in pretty strange. I miss Acrobatics. Also being able to cast my custom "disposition +100 for 10s" spell.

-It's less obvious who has what spells you can buy

It's nice that bows have been improved. I remember bows in Oblivion totally sucking but now I can one-shot almost anybody. Sweet.

Edit: Also the Perks. Good idea, but none of them are really fun. Nothing like the perks in FO3, just boring "increase your [skill damage] by 20%" (except for backstab) And this should have been more violent! I feel like the combat would have been more satisfying with more blood.

Take the one hand perk that gives you a chance to decapitate with every swing. My orc gets quite a few of those kills.

For a challenge I decided to go pure caster and to run through the mage quests at low level. I started the quest line at 4 and am on the very last quest now at level 11 I think. I've already done the hardest part with the dwemer dungeons and taking on the worst boss. Now I'll get the mage tower as my house with easy access to alchemy and enchanting.  :)
