Unwashed Village / Re: Post your dum things hear.

The guy from my group at university overheard the following conversation between his fiancé and one of her girlfriends:
This was last winter when Aalborg (the city I live in) had quite a bit of snow. Several large trucks had been driving snow away from the dunes created by the plows all over the city.

Girlfriend: "Wow.. that's a lot of snow"
Fiancé: "Yeah"
Girlfriend: "Wonder what they do with it."
Fiancé: "They dump it in the harbour."
Girlfriend: "Nooo.. How are they going to get it up again?!"
Fiancé: -silence-

At another time, his girlfriend was attending a mountain bike expedition to Sweden. The instructor told them to stock up on energy bars as it would be a long trip. One of the other girls replied:

"Those bars.. can't you get them sugar free?"
She didn't want to get fat :D

Unwashed Village / Re: Speaking of Vista
« on: September 06, 2007, 01:00:06 AM »
I'm kinda puzzled why everyone is having problems with Vista. I know I'm not exactly a newbie when it comes to computers, but I've never had any problems with Vista. I could imagine it would be worse if you're running on hardware with drivers not designed for Vista.

I like Vista. It's not vastly better than XP, but it is a step up. The Aero interface is pretty much useless, but purdy. Security is improved, not only the functional aspect, but I find it a lot easier to setup permissions.

Network functionality? I don't know what problems SysMan has had, but I have a Linux PC, an XP PC and my Vista laptop - all on the same network, and all without problems.

What most people seem to dislike is the security dialogs (allow etc), but that doesn't bother me, as it is just a simple click, and second of all, you only need it when a program needs permission to write to a restricted folder (i.e. when you install a program, change the registry etc.) It's like switching to the superuser on linux. Perhaps you could even log on as administrator like you do on XP, but then the security goes down the drain.

I have yet to experience any viruses or spyware on Vista (but I didn't have many problems with them on XP either).

I'd say give it a try with a neutral mindset - especially if it's free.

Man, they really need to sort out their DVD's. I wanted to see how much the entire collection would cost, but I don't even know where to begin finding an entire collection, as nothing is "Season 1" and so on.

I agree with Chucara on the point that sometimes the hassles aren't worth it.

I agree with me too! And I didn't even state any opinions yet! I'm that cool :D

Sad news indeed. I can't say that I am surprised, but I am at a loss for words. I don't think I can say it better than it has already been said: Steve brought a tremendous spirit to this community, and I will surely miss him. What I perhaps will remember best about him was his sheer determination not to let his bad health affect his mood. And while it naturally did at times, I am amazed at how little.

You will be missed, rest well friend.

About Looking for group before? It's a pretty funny webcomic.

First, take a gander at this selected comic:

Then, this very funny video starring Richard the Necromancer:

Things I miss:

The Colbert Report (delicious sarcasm)
The Simpsons
Bad Lad's Army
Gay Army (Scandinavian show, where they found the twelve most feminine guys available and put them through something that resembled military training (read: really, really watered down) Even though, they folded under pressure)

I signed up to Facebook, mostly to check it out to see if there's money to be made developing Applications. Problem is: I have no idea which applications, or indeed what the whole point of Facebook is..

Almost forgot, I read Interview with a Vampire and The Vampire Lestat by Ann Rice. Both are interesting reads - they're not terribly well-written (not bad either), but they have compelling characters. I consider Ann Rice's The Vampire Chronicles the best vampire books out there, as everything else seems to go overboard.

Now, wheres the article for men who are too clingy and how they can avoid such a fate?

Easy, if you are a straight, non-desperate man, you already qualify.

They aren't going to jail. They are just going broke. By "bail out" I meant that these politicians are suggesting we give them money so they don't lose their homes.

LOL! Ahh.. well that makes more sense. I still don't agree, but it makes more sense. I thought you meant bail out in the literal sense, as in putting up money for bail bonds.

Unwashed Village / Re: Once again... food recipes?
« on: August 27, 2007, 08:39:30 PM »
I enjoy cooking, and am actually quite good at it, although I do it quite rarely (making advanced dishes, at least).

Off the top of my head, my favorites are:
I apologize for the complete lack of cooking terminology in English. I hardly ever read English cookbooks.
--------------------------------------------
Greek Prawns

(quantities don't really matter that much)
Shredded tomatoes
Shrimps
Feta cheese
Garlic

Bring the tomatoes to a boil, add oregano, salt and pepper (taste for amounts)
Take one or two pieces of garlic (the small ones that are inside the entire garlic), chop it into very small pieces, and add it.
Pour the mix into either a large or several small dishes (if you want to make portions)
Put shrimp and feta on top of it, the tomatoes should just barely cover the shrimps, the cheese doesn't have to be covered.

Cook it in the oven for 5-10 minutes on 225 degrees C.

Very nice appetizer.

------------------------
I enjoy a good steak for the main course, but that hardly requires a recipe. I usually make a lot of vegetables (bell peppers, carrots, squash etc.), which are fried in olive oil and spiced with salt, pepper and plenty of herbs (rosemary, oregano, parsley - almost anything tastes good). This is always vastly popular when I cook for people, and it's so extremely easy to make.

Unwashed Village / Re: The best political system
« on: August 27, 2007, 08:28:46 PM »
"Least worst" is quite possibly representative democracy - as an outsider, I don't like the two-party system, simply because it has the potential to throw away 49% of the votes (If 51% in each state voted for the same candidate, 49% for others) or possibly more.

In the Danish system, each party gets an amount of mandates roughly equal to the percentage of votes received (parties with less than 2% of the votes are excluded).

Each party points to a single candidate for Prime Minister. Typically, there are only two candidates, but it is not a given. Again, we are back at Right vs Left (although most Americans would probably consider both sides to be left, except perhaps for one party - the conservatives).

Whenever a vote is required during Government, a simply majority is required to pass. For important bills, each party has the same stance, but it is also quite common for a party to allow its members to vote individually. (Even if a MP voted "off-party", he would only get excluded from the party, but would retain his MP status).

This means that even small parties can have an influence, as alliances can be formed across the board in order to get a bill passed. It also means that we have a quite broad spectrum of opinions.

I like that system, even though the two large parties (socialist and liberal) have the most power. Which in turn is fair as they have the most votes.

Unwashed Village / Re: Religion - Good or Bad?
« on: August 27, 2007, 08:19:18 PM »
Conversely to your initial point, I think that the world would be a worse place if those cultural expressions were made illegal. If they had never existed in the first place, I dunno.

The idea of the discussion was if it had never existed. I am very strongly against any kind of censorship, be it towards religion, video games or anything else (except Tom Cruise).

Whatever you geeks suggest, I'll just wait for the movie *nods*

Seriously though, my list of recommendations wouldn't exactly be interesting to many (if any) of you.

The last fiction book I read was The Lord of the Rings trilogy shortly before the first movie was released. After that, everything I've read has been computer science related. I've read quite a lot of those though.
