Why are my fonts jaggy and my pictures pixelated?

My fonts look weird. I did nothing. The boyfriend is sleeping so I can't ask him but he's got enough intelligence to refrain from messing around with settings. We did install iTunes but as of last night, it was fine. We went to sleep at the same time so I don't know what's going on.

The effect with the fonts is similar to having a thin font in Photoshop and stretching it out. You can still see the font but one pixel over you have that semi transparent line. eg. You have a N. On the first leg there's a 50% transparent bar about oh 7 pixels high and one pixel wide, then one pixel over the N begins but with that faded N leg next to it.

Pictures look rasterized and so do icons.

I'm downloading the newest version of my Nvidia drivers but is there anything else, I should do?

No wine but I will be going to a tequila dinner tonight and I'm not really a drinker. I think I'll refuse the tequila and just eat the food and make some people cry.

Ok. After my post my computer went into 4 bit mode with a 640 resolution. I installed Direct X 10 and the upgraded Nvideo Geforce 5200 drivers.

Now, I have 16 and 32 bit color but my computer starts but I can't see anything on the monitor. I get a message about it being 'out of range'. So I then have to restart my computer in safe mode. In safe mode I have all the colors and the ability to go on line but I really don't know what's going on. =/

Ok... NOW... my internet connection stops after a few minutes and I have to restart the computer to get back on.

AVG shows nothing now but I did have one infected .exe file.

Hrmm...you could try what I had to do when I noobed up my drivers just recently and used System Restore to fix it.

But first tell the dog to stop looking at pr0n and getting your computer infected.   :P

I got some sort of weird message when I tried to do a system restore. It was 3 hours ago (or so) and I don't seem to remember it.

I tried it, it wasn't turn off (System Restore) but it gave me a message to go to System Restore even though I was there. So I couldn't use System Restore.

Now I'm starting my computer in VGA mode and I seem to be able to stay online and use music. At this point that's all I need. I'll be happy with that until I get a Mac.

There are a few things it could be, the first is your refresh rate, LCD's usually stop working if the refresh rate is too high but occasionally they go a bit mad and allow a refresh above what they can handle and you get the effect you're seeing.  It may also be your drivers, try uninstalling them using driver cleaner and re-installing the newest ones, if it's neither of these it could be that something is corrupting the drivers somewhere along the line or it might be that your card is broken, nVidia cards tend to do what you're describing if they're faulty.

I even saw one that had caught fire and fused itself to the motherboard in the process.

Mine sucked. It seriously sucked. But it still works, I tested it last week.

I have personally seen three Radeon 9800s blow out. One was mine, and two were friends of mine. The third one actually smoked out and damaged some of the interior.

*prepares for the ramifications of using the term "smoked out" on this forum*
