Title: NaNoWriMo 2008
Post by: Solwyn on October 18, 2008, 11:19:37 PM
Who's in?
During Script Frenzy of last year I finished my first book, so I'm going to write the second book in the series for nanowrimo. The idea is to sell them to a publisher as incentive that I've already gotten one written.

We'll see how it goes.

Awesome!

You're doing better than most writers. You're writing! =)

I still have to put my adventure involving Bluecross and 60's counterculture icons to paper.

mine was pretty pathetic last year too! but i'm sort of writing a novel already. maybe i will use this nanowrimo as an excuse to finish it. i already have 50ish pages. and a good outline. can i still play?

also! wow syl! you are quoting me in your sig line. i feel witty!

They've said before they don't really care. The purpose of the event is really just to get something finished in a certain amount of time. The required wordcount is really more like a "novella" than a novel, because they want it to be legally qualified as a novel but probably not be something publishable within a month. Just get it all on paper and then edit it later. I was doing pretty well last year but then that book hit a brick wall because major plot points rested on stuff I needed to research (biblical history and Jewish "mythology"), so by the time I got out of the library and the turkey sweats wore off from thanksgiving, it was over.

I'm psyched though, I've got one book down and another on it's way.

Also NO: Are you talking about the home business one or did you finish another?

weee, got the first invite for our Calgary meet up today. It's this Saturday!   Now all I need is an idea and a character to run around and do stuff in that idea!

Another. Called "Do the Web Write". About website copywriting, setup (like how many pages, what order should they be in, etc.) Basically, it's a book about website conversion (turning visitors into someone who takes an action), and general writing too

Expect a copy of that to be bought by me when it comes out. I have a few people at work that NEED to read that.

I believe I'm going to try and do it for once instead of just saying I'm going too. We'll see if I stick to it once November comes round.

Write about someone writing about NaNoWriMo but something (ominous music starts) happens...

That was my plan last year but it turned out like fifty other people in the DFW area were doing that. : (

We all failed before moving on to another idea.

The website is driving me crazy. I remember it doing this last year...SUPER slow at peak times and impossible to navigate anything. Ugh.

Anyway, my username is crystaljessee. Add me! And tell me your names!

This is proving more difficult than I'd thought. I've had an idea for a comic I've been kicking around for the past four years or so. I've outlined it and mulled it over enough over that time to have more or less the entire story ready to go in my head. That said, the problem is that, well, it was a comic. Dialogue+visuals. I'd spent so much time and thought on how the imagery would be directed, on occassion how I would subtly hint at things, or use visual symbology.

And now I'm trying to write it out as a story, and it's just not packing the same punch. It's coming off as dull and uninspired so far, and yet the story has come to mean so much to me that I don't really want to change things. Plus, I'm finding that certain things that would have been subtle and barely noticable as a picture becomes blatant when you type them out.

I'm almost to the point where I'm considering scrapping this idea and just doing something new.

Edit: Also, I'm still not sure on what narrative style I wanna commit too. Standard third person or alternating first person where each chapter is first person from the perspective of one character.

The Time Traveler's Wife did something similar and it worked very well.

First Chapter - The Time Traveler in First Person

Second Chapter - The Time Traveler's Wife in First Person

And then back and forth. If not for all the novel than at least a majority of it.

I have already written, for my first day, 2, 834 words!

Of course they are 2000 words that are rubbish and the other that are left are rough, but I have learned to not edit as I go! Even the horrid typos that stand out in neon flashing signs!  I hope to do well this year. I shall remember, writing is fun!

Writing is fun!!!

i'm failing. but i'm having issues concentrating on anything much besides anime right now.

i have nearly two pages handwritten, which (i think) is close to 1000? not entirely sure though

handwritten? yikes, you are brave! :)

i still haven't figured out how to add people as friends. i have figured out that you have to view their profiles, which seems impossible with just screennames. for all intensive purposes, i am just going to list my number profile: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/445568. what are yours? please tell me, i am dying to read what you all have written as your synopsis so far!

2428 words for me. ha i think i'm sort of on track. maybe. :)
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2008
Post by: AcdQueen89 on November 03, 2008, 05:17:28 PM
i dont have a synopsis up yet, mostly due to slow internet trying to navigate a slow site.

i've also been trying to work myself around the fact that i have three papers that i havent started due in the next two weeks (a one page, a 4 page and a 6-8 page). then on top of that i've volunteered myself to direct/film a movie for my friend's english final, kinda glad that i dont have to have that part done till second week of december. but that's another story.

i've got 350 words typed. maybe 700 written total. i hand write first cuz its easier for me to take with me places to write. no power supply to worry about and the profs cant tell that i'm not taking notes ^^

I am already WAY BEHIND because I got off to a weaksauce start, but I've been plugging away and beating the per-day quota for the last couple days.  Unfortunately since I'm going to Richmond this weekend I probably won't write at all saturday and sunday, so I have to at least catch up to the quota by tomorrow, or I'll be absurdly behind on monday.

I'm currently having a writer's crisis. One of those ones where you debating eating a shotgun.

Turns out my character's name is VERY similar to another one in a similar book, and the setting is in the same general area. And every day I'm hearing more and more about my story (keep in mind I've already finished one book and this is number two) that are seeming more and more similar to another author's work.

I want to die.

The worst part is that the book has been made into a motion picture and it's coming out soon, and until today I didn't know ANYTHING about it. Hadn't read it, hadn't heard about it, hadn't watched a trailer. I'm not going to say what film/book, but I might quit NaNoWriMo this year.

Please, no awkward adolescent internet flirting in the nanowrimo thread.  Some of us are trying to fail at things we care about.

my campus is closed due to what is being known as plague 2008. classes resume tuesday. (as of this writing i am showing no symptoms of plague *knocks on wood*)

so my weekend has pretty much been reduced to: NaNo or hw.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2008
Post by: Solwyn on November 07, 2008, 11:51:40 PM
I stopped being suicidal, and I think my goal for this year's NaNoWriMo will be to make revisions to the original story as to make it not seem like a terrible plagiarism.

To be honest, the character's name and the setting are the two things that are truly similar, EVERY other aspect of the story just happens to be the same genre, not at all similar.

Also, I'll try to bring the word count from 60k to 80k, so I'll be writing AT LEAST 20k words (probably way more since as I edit I'm going to take giant chunks out).

Wish me luck!

I finally got off my ass, deleted the mishmash that I had already written in an unfocused halfassed attempt, and really started writing. I only got 1500 words done before I had to go to work but I felt back, to an extent. I was having fun doing it. I'm going to start again in a little bit. Technically I'm still a little over ten thousand words shy of my deadline, but I wrote 1500 words so quickly and enjoyed doing it so much  that I can see myself pulling a few 3-4000 word days to make up the time.

For myself, I thought I gave up - as I have not written anything for a week...but today I got the urge to start again. So yay me.  lol

word count wise I am horribly behind, and I am still nameless. Well, I am not...but my book is. if ya got book name Ideas I'll take em!  :D
