Had to look this up for a discussion over at Fark and figured I'd post it here too just for those that haven't seen it.

linky

It's the classic "Jane, you ignorant slut" skit.   ;)

Unwashed Village / Arrrrgh! >.<

So I was watching The Insider for the first time as it came on TV. I recorded it on my TIVO and the last 10 minutes WEREN'T RECORDED!!! It was a really good movie and now I don't get to see how it ended.   :(

FYI - it's the movie with Russell Crow and Al Pacino about the former corporate level tobacco industry guy whose life is basically destroyed by the company when he agrees to testify about what he knows. As someone that smoked for 10 years (15-25) I was very interested in the story. I guess I have to go look up the guy on Wiki now to see what happened to him.   :/

Update - Wiki gave a pretty detailed description of the entire movie including the ending. So at least now I don't feel quite as cheated.  :)

Unwashed Village / Falcons game 4:30pm EST
« on: January 03, 2009, 08:58:53 PM »
If you are a football fan at all and want to watch what should be a great offensive shootout, watch this game. All but 3-4 Falcon games have been very close and very fun to watch.

As most of you will recall, I'm a huge Raider fan but Atlanta is my hometown. I've adopted the Falcons as my home team since Arthur Blank bought the team and I'm very pleased with the direction he has things going.

Anyway, just a heads up for those that might be interested.

Unwashed Village / Baiing out newspapers?

Connecticut lawmaker Frank Nicastro sees saving the local newspaper as his duty. But others think he and his colleagues are setting a worrisome precedent for government involvement in the U.S. press.

Uh...no. Just...no.

There are so many problems with that idea but I'll just go over the biggest two IMO.

First, government controlled news media? Why don't we just start spelling America with a 'k'? (Tick reference) There are so many problems that could arise from the government owning and controlling the media that it's rediculous. If you think the media sucks now (which is does) just wait until government stooges are censoring stories coming across the wire like those two goons in Good Morning Vietnam.

Second, it's the natural order of things that businesses that produce a product that is no longer useful will either adapt and grow into more useful areas or they will go out of business. Think of how hard it was for stagecoach companies to stay in business after everyone started getting cars. Newspapers have been losing readers for years due to the internet  in the same way. They can't generate ad revenue like they used to because their readership is dispersed due to access to numerous news sources via the net. Most of them aren't going out of business because of poor business models (see Big 3 auto makers) but because there's simply less demand.

This bailout nonsense is getting completely out of hand. After 9/11, conservative talk radio started talking about how the government handouts to family members of the victims would lead to more and more handouts for everything you can think of. They were spot on. It's gone from only big things like 9/11 or Katrina to normal every day stuff like a business failing. Businesses fail every day in this country. Are we going to bail them all out? Give me a compelling reason that we should turn down a guy that owns a manufacturing plant that employs 150 people yet approve money for a newspaper? There isn't one. It's just going to be a pick a choose situation and I think we all know that companies that grease palms in DC are going to get the bailouts, not the little guys.

Unwashed Village / NFL last regular season thread

Many great games again today. My Raiders finished out with their 5 win. Not much to cheer for there but at least our offense has improved here lately. The Falcons won their game and came within a last second Carolina field goal of winning the NFC South. Now they have to go in as a wild card which means playing away from home.

The Cowgirls are getting the snot beaten out of them and will be eliminated from the playoffs which makes me so freaking happy.  ;D  Also if things pan out like it looks like they will then the Patriots won't get into the playoffs either. That also makes me happy.  ;D

Unwashed Village / Heh, I stumbled into finding out a Christmas present
« on: December 24, 2008, 06:35:24 AM »
I got some money from my aunt again. She's the one that sent me enough last year to help me get the HDTV I have instead of a smaller one. Anyway, she came through again and sent some cash. So I was going to go to Best Buy tonight with my step-dad and I said, "Hey, I'll use a little of this cash and get Chuck season 1 on DVD so we can watch one tonight." My parents are big fans of Chuck and Life like I am but missed the first few episodes  of each show  during their first season so it seemed like a cool thing to get. After telling my mother this she says, "Hold on" and I hear much discussion in the background as she's talking to my step-dad. He gets on and says that you should never go shopping for yourself before Christmas.  ;D

So I've got season1 of Chuck when Christmas day comes. I changed gears and got season 1 of Life instead and also got the nice two disk version of the Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice for my mom. My mother loves that movie and I do too. Now we have the movie plus a bunch of extra stuff to watch.  8)

Unwashed Village / Booosh! (Season 15 NFL thread)
« on: December 22, 2008, 07:47:05 AM »
Interesting games this weekend to say the least. There are still several pre-playoff scenarios that need to play out but some big steps were taken by a few teams. The Giants won and get to stay in NY. They beat Carolina who now have to win next week or they'll likely cede the top spot in their division to Atlanta. I watched Atlanta's game today fairly sure they'd lose in Minnesota just because the Viking defense was a tough match up for them but they surprised me and won. Now they are in the playoffs as either a wild card or division champ no matter what.

Matt Ryan continues to impress me and everyone else watching him. If he can avoid a sophomore jinx next season and continue to improve I'd be willing to say he's the next Payton Manning. He's got complete control of the offense Atlanta is running, never seems to lose his confidence, and is making decisions you normally have to wait 3-4 years to see a QB make.  In the last three weeks I've also seen him pull off some sick play action fakes that I've never seen anyone do before. One involved flipping the ball out of his hands towards his RB then stepping up to grab it and make a pass. I'm so glad I'll get to watch him every week down here.  8)
