Hold on a second...
« on: January 07, 2014, 06:12:27 AM »
China crushes tons of ivory into dust in order to curb the ivory poaching.

Uh...

The poachers poach because it a very lucrative (if not dangerous) business.  Supply and demand, you know.

But...

Didn't they just decrease the supply?  Thus raising the prices?  And then providing more incentive to poachers?

Doesn't seem like the correct solution to me.

How about all those governments taking all the impounded ivory and selling it CHEAPLY on the open market?

From the article, this sounds more to me like a public demonstration of its "worthlessness" to the Chinese government than anything else. Sort of like how they cracked down on Bitcoin a few weeks ago, banning its use in financial institutions, which saw the value plummet. Sort of a "this means nothing to us, so it shouldn't mean anything to you." kind of thing.

Plus, the US crushed the same amount in November.
